Post Budget alternator upgrade?

I need more power for my charging system but I can't afford the 130A conversion available in the magazines. I was wondering if anyone else has pirated an alternator from another car. Does anyone know what a lincoln Mark VII alternator is rated at? I'm an ace at wiring so I'm not worried about that, I just need something that'll fit the stock bracket. I'm looking for something with at least 90A.

I haven't been able to confirm this - but you could try a 96 Aerostar 3.0 V6 130 amp alt - it's supposed to be a straight drop in - minus the upgraded wiring. I got my alt as a rebuild from a boneyard with a heavy duty regulator.

I've found out that a 130A alternator will fit after you modify the bracket, It turns out that quite a few fords have them and the spacing of the bolts is the same.

In the Summit catalogue there is a high output conversion kit available that will convert a 60A alternator to 105A and is only $35.99. Has anyone used this? I have an old alternator that I might try this with if I can't get a reasonably priced 130A used alternator.

if your bracket is the same as the 87-93 car then you can use a stock alternator form a 94-98 gt mustang. all you have to do if notch your bracket a tiny bit a do a small wiring job and you have 130 amps. my alternator came from a junk yard, and off of a 96 gt. the best part is it cost $40

The brackets are the same, the only reason I was afraid of doing this swap before was because the kits for doing this were like $170 US (~$300 CDN) so I figured that there must be more than meets the eye but in those kits you have to modify the bracket yourself anyway and the wiring can be sourced even from a car stereo shop, I don't mind using a used alternator either, I'm going to go for it!

I believe that the swap is also reffered to as putting in a 2nd generation alternator, so i think that 94-95 and on have 130 ampers.......

Red82GT, Pre-1986 cars require a heavy duty power wire for the alternator because the factory wire can't handle the extra amperage.
Check out www.pa-performance.com
They sell the wiring kits for the 3G alternators that you will need and also that IMPORTANT power wire.
