Question A/C heating vent problem!

Hi everyone. I have the following problem. After turning on, no air comes out of the A/C-heating vents but does come out from the defroster vents by the windshield.
Could this be a A/C heating unit panel problem? or is there a solenoid or sensor behind the heating/AC control panels which switch on and off the vents?
I need to know so I can save myself a trip to my mechanic and save cash!

Pop your hood and look on the drivers side (just behind the upper intake) theres a block of vac. hoses. One says A/C and it runs across to passenger side. Mine was crimped so bad that it wouldnt open the doors for the various vents. Hope this helps. John
