A/C Not Chillin'......
When I turn on the A/C, the compressor kicks in for a second, the pulley engages, and then stops almost immediately (about 1 second). It doesn't blow cold, obviously, but it did until just recently. I have not re-charged the system for over 2 years. Could that be the problem, or is the compressor failing? Any thoughts would be appreciated!
I may be the only guy asking about my A/C in the middle of winter, but we have to think ahead, right? Mike |
Your problem usually indicates a lack of freon. Have someone put a set of gauges on the system and check it. If it needs freon, it probably needs compressor oil too.

I agree with Maroon get some guages on it ands see whats really goin on .... I was half expecting to see you from Texas in your sig since we have been a little warm here too.

I dunno if you've converted to the R112..it's an easy conversion, since the old freon isnt readily available anymore and getting REAL expensive... but in anycase.. you can by a charging kit at any autoparts store and the cans too.... but there is a LOW PRESSURE cut off switch for the AC system a believe, so it wont work if there isnt enough freon in the lines... the nice things about converting is you dont have to take it to a place to do it... you can do it all yourself... and it's reasonably cheap... though if you DO recahrge the system, make sure you use the ultra violet oil... this way if it's leaking, wich it probabably is... you'll be able to find the leak with a black light....I know I did mine and the condenser connectors were leaking... put in some new O rings and it was good to go...

Converting the Mustang R-12 system to R-134 is not a good idea, unless several components are replaced. R-12 is readily available, although expensive. It is cheaper than doing a proper conversion. The $29 kits may work for a while, but can eventually ruin a lot of components and really cost you some big money.
All R-12 systems, at this time, are getting some age on them and thus the seals are failing. My '89 needs new seals, and over the next few weeks, I will replace them, have the system evacuated and recharged with R-12 and new oil. If you want to convert to the R-134 and have it operate properly, follow this link: http://puter.dreamwater.net/r134a.html Print it out, as I lost the instructions once due to the author changing web hosts. Here is another source for conversion information: http://www.aircondition.com/ - Got to the Forums |
sorry I got my numbers confused... but I had never heard of the 134 being an issue.... I had in my car all summer without issue... though it's been cold up here so we'll see what happens this comming summer... but isnt the deal with the r12, is they cant make it anymore? and we're stuck with only what's left in stock?
