I've been wondering if anyone actually has a real answer to this question for a while. When you remove your smog pump, and the computer starts throwing codes about thermactor stuff, does the computer make performance suffer? Some friends with chevys have said that their computers will pull back timing and basically run like crap. Has anyone actually checked this? Or better yet, has anyone dynoed before removing smog, while no codes are shown, and then dynoed after removing it when codes are shown? Thanks. I'm considering removing my smog pump too, but am not sure if I want to yet.

I took out my smog pump and a/c at the same time. Also have an underdrive pulley on the crank. Used a large bolt and hose clamps to plug lines into firewall. Used a string to wrap thru pulleys to determine belt length. Did not seem to mess up computer at all. Pulls hard and revs quicker.

What do you do with the Metal tube coming from the back of the engine? The rest looks pretty simple.

The tubes run into the back of the heads and down to the crossover. You have to remove the tube from the crossover and plug it then pull the tubes off the back of the heads. They are held on with a bolt on each head that goes through a coupler type thingy. After you get them removed cut the tubes off of the coupler and flip the couplers over and bolt them back down to seal the hole in the head. I removed mine and had no ill effects whatsoever.

I take it that you don't have cats? Otherwise, removing the air pump would be a mistake. It doesn't affect performance at all.
