C4 rebuild. Need some quick guidance.

Just need some quick advice...

A stock C4 can back up a strong motor until around 600hp, right? I'm about to get mine rebuilt and perhaps put a diff torque converter (at a diff stall rpm). There's some choices of places I can go to get it done, however, I am right now focusing on a certain shop where the guy is (or was) an avid racer down at the local track. I also heard that a good amt of ppl at the track go to him for tranny stuff.

For a rebuilt C4 with a little beefing up (I plan to have it behind a motor that is pushing at least 450 hp at the flywheel), it should run me around $700 to $900, right? I'm figuring into price the amount of labor to take it out and put it back in b/c I'd rather them just do all that so if anything wasn't hooked up correctly, they'd have to deal with it, not me.

A rebuilt C4 with a good shift kit, trans cooler and a looser coverter will do you fine. You can get a C4 like this from most of the mail order houses for about 700.00. For 1800.00 you get a full manual reverse valve body, trans brake, better drum, etc... That trans is good for around 800 h.p.

Don't forget to get a nice performance shifter while your're at it.

Hey exgmguy, thanks for replying. I checked it out today at a place and the guy said for a stock rebuild it'd be about $800 (kinda steep, IMO) . He said that for a 'beefed' up tranny (more clutches, diff torque converter, etc) would run ~$1100. (still kinda steep, IMO). So, I went to another guy and he said he'd do it for around $650 or less (stock rebuild) and he would beef it up with same torque converter (which is okay with me) for around $750. So I'm going with him, and IMO, he's a lot more trustworthy. Gonna take it over there Wed of next week. SHould be done by Friday.

Brian, thanks for the added input, I hadn't really considered it. Thanks for mentioning that. (I think it's be fun)
After I get this done, hopefully I can get the drag radials put on the car and take it to the track. :D

Cool, I'm glad you found what you were looking for.

LX XLR8R 12-28-2001 02:11 PM

dude just buy a new one like i am from dynamic for 795 race built allreaddy..

I was just going to add what LX XLR8R just said. I saw them in Summit and and other places. I would get one of those and a new stall converter. I bet you could get both for about $1200 depending on what stall speed you are looking for. I would say a 2500-3000 stall speed for what you plan on building.
Too bad we didn't live in the same area. I would LOVE to help you but your beast together!
Talk to you later Jamal

my c-4 cost me 450 plus 300 for torque conv. $300 for blue clutches, kevlar band, full manual shift kit, and roller sprag. It works great. Pull it yourself and take it to them, no big stink. Make sure it has an "H" servo on it. I had to rebuild mine 3 time in 3 wks because mine had an "O" servo and wasn't makeing enough pressure. Good luck. John

John,,,,, How is the A servo??? A buddy and I are going to be building a C4 after the holidays and it has an A servo.

Hmmm, now you guys got me thinking (can't really say if that's a good or bad thing :D).

I did see a few C4s for sale in Summit at decent prices ($700 to $900 is my price range) and that is now another option. In consideration of this new option, I seek more guidance from the all-knowing Mustang Works masters. I am not familiar with tranny brand names. Also, I will definately put a trans cooler and aftermarket shifter in the car (maybe-- still considering the 'shifter' option). I need suggestions on purchasing a C4 (I know I'm being really general). My goal for the '79 is for a mid to low 11 sec street car. Don't want too high of a stall either. Need suggestions on shifter and tranny.

Basically, if I were to buy a C4 from Summit or Dynamic Racing Transmissons, etc, it needs to be able to back up AT LEAST a 450 hp blown motor, w/ neck-snapping shifting capabilities, and be under $900. I don't want to put it in. I'd rather a shop install it so I have to add labor to that. (In this case, I just don't want to deal with the removal and installation process-- just don't feel like it).

Coolbreeze, the tech at Trans-Go said go w/ the "H". They are in most of the c-4's outta trucks. A stock c-4 should be able to handle most anything a street car can throw at it. I go to the track almost every weekend. And have been going to runday sunday at bradenton. My trans is holding fine, puttn down 11.77's
