C5
Have been getting info together for AOD to C4 swap such as converter, shifter etc. Then my tranny guy comes up a C5 and says he likes the parts, especially the valve body, better than C4 due to strength. Size etc. is almost identical to C4? Has anyone used a C5 in lieu of the 4?
Thanks as always for your input.

C5
There was a C5 used for a few years in the 80's I believe. Mostly on the Econoline Vans and some trucks.

they also came in the 80's t-birds and cougars, i think that guy has lost his mind. theres a reason that they only put them in the 6 cylinders. i have heard nothing but bad about them. my 3.8 cougar used to eat at least 1 a year

There is some good parts in that c5, but I'd take them out and put them in a c4. One of the cluch drums has an extra disc in it, thats good. But I think thats all you would want out of it.

Just dug out the book.
looks like the major change is that the c5 has a lock up torque converter. This is a mechanical set up, it ingages when the rpm goes past a preset point. This trans was only used 81 to 86, so they a little harder to find. It think if the lockup can be avoided, it should work fine.

The C5 is a better case than a C4. It has larger oil passages in it. Pan is deeper too. The Bell housing is about 1" deeper than a C4 due to its lock up converter. Therefore a C4 converter will fit a C5 but will not allow it to engauge the trany due to the depth or the Bell. Find a 157 bell and bolt it to your C5 trany,it will work.
