Calling all 351W guys-Please help identify which water pump I have
I am having problems with the car overheating and pushing water back out through the radiator after about 2 minutes of idling. I am using what I hope is a 302 5.0 water pump on a '69 block. I's supposed to be reverse rotation. the part number for a standard rotation is 8843 and the reverse rotation is 8840. The reverse rotation is for a serpentine setup which I am using. How can I check to make sure my water pump is a reverse rotation and not that standard. I'm thinking maybe Summit sent me the wrong pump. It's either that or the pulley'a and/or thermostat, right?

this is guest a red neck suggestion take the theromstat out and remove antifreeze run a long tube from your pump to a bucket of water and swap around until you find which way it's flowing. dont let the engine get hot. thats why we take out the theromstat out so you want have to get it hot to open.

Your water pump should be turning counter clockwise, is it?

if you pull the back of the water pump off. you will be able to see the impeller... spin the shaft counterclock wise and are the impellers spinning the right direction..and I would get a new radiator cap.. Cheap, and you wouldnt believe how such a little things effects the cooling system like a bad radiator cap. Blows off prior to the actual design pressure of the cooling system... peace..
