Cam?
Well, I've been working on the 87 abit lately, and I've discovered a question: What kind of cam should I install? I'm planning on GT40 aluminum heads, GT40 Intake Manifold, 65mm TB, and 1 5/8 headers+ a hotter cam , which I would greatly appreciate your feedback on. I have been advised by many to go with an E303 and 1.6s, and by several others to go with a F303. I'm not looking to have a serious drag racer here, just a street racer with some extra power..
I would really appreciate any and all feedback. Thank you, Sac68 ------------------ 98 Mustang coupe 3.8L V6 87 Mustang GT hatchback 5.0L V8 87 Bronco XLT 4bbl 351W My mom drives a 99 Mustang GT convertable. They are probably some good choices. However if you can get some flow numbers for the cylinder heads. I would get those and give as much information to a cam rep as you can. They should have a pretty good reccomendation. I'm building a 347 and called Comp Cams. They're suggestion for mine was a Nitrous HP cam. Funny thing is I'm not running any nitrous just gave'em my combo (from filter to diff gear and electronics) and told them 450+ hp with a set of AFR 185 cc heads. On paper things seem to be working out so far. Can't wait in another month or so I'll have the engine finished and just about ready to fire up. I'm saving for a Vic 5.0 intake (need to add a spacer though so that total runner length from valvestem to entry is 14 inches).
BTW anybody know someone in Virginia that can dyno an EFI engine? (not chasis dyno but engine dyno). |

Stock cam is around (211,115lsa,.444")
THe E cam is the crane 2040 (220,110lsa,.498) THe crane 2031 cobra cam was made for this combo (214/220,112lsa,.513/.529), with 1.7 rr. If you use 1.6 rockers, go with the crane 2030 (216/220,112lsa,.533/.544)... essentially the same. These give you a little more lift, and the modest duration maintains cylinder pressure, so it'll work better with the speed density. Plus, the 112lsa has a broader torque band, so it'll be better on the street. You can get either cam kit (with springs) for $210... so it might be worth it to get the heads bare, and get the better manley race flow valves for $195. If you're not gonna blow it, definitely increase compression by some milling... 0.030" = 0.5 more compression. You might consider some cheaper Explorer/GT40P iron heads too... more compression, more heat retention, and smaller ports/runner = high flow velocity, and good low end performance. ------------------ '89.5 5L LX, hatch, Medium Canyon Red, 155K Km (No winters), 5sp, 3.08, GT interior, a/c, Alpine CD, K/N, Crane PS91, Walbro 190 LPH, March Pulleys, Mr. Gasket 180 therm (HP balanced), 3 core rad, MarkVIII fan, Variflow controller, Polygraphite front bushings, FMS-5300B springs, 6 KYB's, 73mm Calipers, Maximum Motorsport 4pt chassis brace, Western Motorsport Racing's Sub-frame connectors. Thanks to everyone for the feedback, its greatly appreciated.
Damn, 3 different suggestions... Skankin, you say that the crane 2031 was specifically designed to work with my planned combo and 1.7s? That sounds like a winner right there. Thanks again, and any further info is still very welcome. |

I like my combo a lot and I would recomend it. With the B cam and 1.7's your lift will be 514 and that cam has a nice meaty duration. Its realy close to the F cam in comparison with those rockers.
