Question Cam Help For My New 347 Stroker

Iam looking for some advice for my new 347 Stroker its got 10.5.1 Comp. Iam useing my Edelbrock RPM heads, with roller rockers and .202-.160 valves 60cc,And a Stealth Intake, 700 DF,DP Holley All MSD Ignition, Its a 1985 Block. It has a 3000 Stall, Full C4 Race Trans, 410 Gears. The car weighs 3000 lbs. I would like to go with a soild lift cam, Thanks for Any advice on the lift and Dur. @ 50.

www.cammotion.com Tell Kip it's a RACE car, and you want a solid roller. You won't be disappointed. Little pricey, but WHOA is it worth it.

Not sure, but I don't think you're gonna be happy with the 700 CFM carb or the Stealth intake.

On a final note, MAKE DAM SURE you have good valve springs on those Edelbrocks. Ford strokers aren't afraid of 7 grand on the tach!

Doesn't have to be. You can still go solid roller cam, aftermarket lifters have links bars on them so you don't need the dogbones and spider setup.

Cam looks pretty killer though!

THANKS,For that info when you say aftermarket lifters do mean any roller type lifter and what do you mean by links bars. Has you can tell i never used a roller cam thanks for the advice, Ronnie

Obviously when using a roller cam, you have to keep the roller wheels lined up with the cam lobes. If not BAD things are going to happen.

On factory Ford roller motors, the lifters have flat spots machined into them perpendicular (90*) to the cam lobe and lifter wheel. Then there are little "dog bones" which are basically 2 horseshoes joined at the arc, that hold onto those flat spots on the lifters. Then there is a "spider" which has 8 legs (go figure!) to hold all the dog bones in place, and it's bolted to the lifter valley via 2 bolts above the cam.

NOT a factory Ford roller lifter, but very similar.

Now, aftermarket lifters have a "link bar" system in lieu of the all of the above. We still have to keep the lifter wheel perpendicular to the cam lobes, but there's a much simpiler way to do it.

Aftermarket roller lifters are permanently paired. Yes, they come in "2's". The flat spots are only machined on 1 side of each lifter, and their connected via a flat piece of steel. Lifter #1's connection is simply a pivot point for the bar. Lifter #2 (of the pair) is connected to the bar in similar fashion, but it's connection is on a slotted hole, to allow movement.

They both accomplish the same thing, we keep our lifters correctly oriented on the cam. But the aftermarket lifters allow us to install roller cams into non-roller blocks.

Hope that explains it a bit, but Cam Motion can help you out if you tell them what you're up to bro. I HIGHLY recommend a solid roller if you have the cash laying around.

I'm in the process of installing a 347 in my Cougar.
The cam I bought is a Crane #449601
It is a Hyd. Roller.
My engine is 10.5 cr, Canfield heads [ported], Hooker long tube headers and dual AFB's [500's].
Cam specs are:
Intake @ valve 542
Exhaust@valve 563
At .050
Intake opens 5 BTDC
Intake closes 39 ABDC
Max lift 107
Duration 224

Exhaust opens 53 BBDC
Exhaust closes (1) BRDC
Max lift 117
Duration 232

Yeah, they're kinda pricey, the lifters are even more pricey.

Duration is kinda low, but that could be due to the 108 LSA. Other than that, sounds GOOD to me! But with those numbers, the car is gonna "sound" like azz until about 3,000 RPM!

Only caution I'm gonna give you on a solid cam. Learn the RIGHT way to set valve lash, get used to it, get good at it, do it often!!!

And you'll have NOOOOOO problems with it!

Thanks for that info, the cam part #31-335-4 COMP CAMS Iam concerned about piston to valve clearance, Here are the pistons that iam useing, 6.5cc/Flat Top
Effective Head Volume: 6.5cc. with my 60 cc Edelbrock RPM HEADS Its going to be 10.5.1 Comp. With that cam do you think i will have any Piston to valve clearance? I would hate to have to buy it put it in cgeck it and send it back, Thanks CAR9FAN

You are aware that the cam you have listed has the old 302 firing order in it, right? Any comp cam with the prefix #31 has this firing order. Just in case, the old firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. The H.O. firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Any comp cam with the prefix #35 has this firing order.

I don't think you will have trouble with clearance. What size valves? 2.02/1.60?
