Cam question.

I have tfs heads, tfs stage 2 cam ,650 carb, victor jr intake. I'm trying to figure out why this thing will not run right. I think it may be a timing/ignition problem. so I'm trying to rule out all the things that could be wrong. My question is, can I run this efi cam in a carbed motor? And expect it to run right. I have messed with the timing a bunch. I am running a msd8582 dist with the proper roller gear, msd 6al, and blaster 3 coil. It runs, and will idle down to 600rpm, but under load starts to miss and even will backfire once in a while. thanks.

The cam will work just fine witha carb. or EFI. It definitely sounds lijke you have a timing or firing order problem though.

The cam should be fine for what you are doing with it. What are you using for an advance? What is your base timing? Have you revved the engine with a timing light on it to see what the total timing is? FWIW, my stock chambered TW's wanted 40 degrees total on my carbed engine.

Re: Cam question.

Last time I had the light on it I set the total @36 deg. while running @2000rpm. I thought it was the carb being new, but the way it is acting leads me to think something is up with the timing.Because I've had the carb worked on and was told the problem is somewhere else. My whole ignition system is a stand alone to help make it easier to troubleshoot. Every part on this thing is new so now I'm trying to work out all the bugs. but it does'nt seem to make much difference when I change the timing.

Re: Cam question.

1) Are you positive you dont have a vacuum leak?

2) Borrow a known working carb from somebody and try it. I had a brand new in the box 575 Holley that wouldnt run for crap. Swapped it out with another and it was fine.

Re: Cam question.

Do you have the ignition box wired to a good engine ground? I'd re-check all your wiring and if that doesn't solve it, get a vacuum gauge to make sure there are no vacuum leaks and to help with tuning the carb.

36-degrees is probably too much for that motor. Try 32-degrees, no more than 34. Also, check it again at 3000 or 3500 to insure that you're seeing all the advance. Many of the MSD advance spring kits aren't at full advance until 2700 to 3000.

Re: Cam question.

I think for starters I'm going to try what Jeff said, and change out the springs on the dist. Also check all my wires. I did notice that I forgot to put on a ground strap from the block to the chassis, so I'll get that done too. but not tonite. "I have a date with a bottle of captain." track season is over here in wisconsin. got in 1 pass, 18.68@67mph. "I think my truck pulling my 24 haulmark could do that."

Re: Cam question.

Don't swap out the springs yet. What Jeff means is that the MSD distributors sometimes don't give you ALL the advance until 3500. You said you set it at 36* at 2000. What might be happening is the distributor isn't done advancing your timing at 2000. It might be taking you up past 40* at 3500. Leave it alone, and check the timing at 3500 RPM and see what it's doing. Like Andy said, check for vacuum leaks too.

OK, I'll won't do anything drastic until I get the light on it. I won't have time to get to it until tues night. :)
