Cool cam selection for '66 289ci

I want to know from the experts who frequent this site what is their opinion? I have a C-code '66 289. I'm looking to add a Performer RPM intake & 600 cfm vac. sec. carb. I need to know the best camshaft for my combo. I have stock heads with pressed-in studs. If I "pin" the styuds in the heads, will i be able to accomodate a more radical camshaft profile without having the spring pockets machined? I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks!

why not get the matching cam? It's almost as easy to drill tap for screw in studs as it is to pin them ;-)

With the Perf RPM level of intake, and a relatively smaller cube motor, you'd probably want (to stay reasonably streetable) a cam with from 205 to 215 intake duration at .050 and (unless you don't mind killing your mileage) stay around .500 lift max. Edelbrock's Perf Plus cam is in that range, although has lobe displacement angle of 112 which broadens rpm range and helps vacuum some, also softens lower range torque a bit. Awhile ago, I helped a guy put a Perf intake & cam, & headers, on a 351W in a full size Bronco and it really ran well and even increased mileage over stock. Comp Cams (www.compcams.com) XE256 is also a good one and has lobe center of 110, I'm sure Crane (www.cranecams.com) also has a similar one. Also check out oemfordparts.com, their SVO parts section, camshafts, for the A312 cam. Ford cam for $70, same range. DEFINITELY ask the mfg's about both studs and maybe having to notch pistons. At .500 lift range, you mite be ble to be OK with stock studs. Oh, you've got decent heads, and can have 1.94 intakes and 1.6(?) exhausts with 3 angle valve job and hard seats put in fairly reasonable and it will also really help wake up the motor. Last item, you can get a Ford Duraspark II electronic non-computer ignition at a junkyard reasonable (I got dist and all for $40 from small country yard - just get distrib to fit 302 block) and it works great on my 70 - 302. Check //members.boardhost.com/MustangSteve for "how-to" and if not there, email me at macx@cape.ultisat.net and I can send. Enjoy!

Macx has the right idea, about the intake, the RPM intake is for higher RPM's if you are just going to be cruising most of the time than you will want your power down low. Check out the performer intake and edelbrock has thier matched stick for it as well, later on, thrown on the heads. You cant go wrong with a designed combo.

I use the RPM set up in mine, first you dont need to pin or change the studs....I have had no problems with mine. If you are just looking for a performance "improvement" and something to cruise around in, go with the regular Edelbrock setup or something comparable, the RPM is more for racing and is not very happy turning low rpms around town.

In the past, when I had a Perfomer RPM and a Carter AFB (Edelbrock) 600, I ran the Comp Cam 280S. GREAT torque - even had 1.7s 60's at the strip. (C4 with 10" Converter and Transpak)

I've moved on to a Victor and Crane 310 duration cam, but that RPM setup was nice for getting off the line with a C4.

I have used up to a Comp 292 cam in my original 289 in my 65 Stang. That cam worked great evan with stock rocker studs and .534 lift. I now am using a Comp Xtreme energy cam with ported stock heads with 1.90 1.60 valves. Ran great with the performer RPM intake and runs even better with the EFI system I use now. Good luck, Chris Rose
