Can this be done?
 

Ok, if you read my last post, I got the clutch fixed, but now I have a different problem, go figure. I heard an exhaust leak yesterday when we put the car back together, and again tonight when I was working on it. I took the header to h-pipe bolts off of the passenger side since thats where the leak was. Checked the bolts, and put them back in. It seems that yesterday we cross-threaded the bolts into the header flange bolt holes. The bolt would go in maybe 1/2" or so. I traded that bolt out for a different bolt of the same size, and got the same results. Is it possible to have the hole in the header flange re-tapped for a size bigger? Has anybody done this, or know somebody who has done this? And if it can be done, whats the chances of doing it while the header is still on the car?? With the blower tubing, and all the other crap on the passenger side (smog) I would hate to take that header off. Any suggestions as always is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried using a correct size tap to clean up the threads ? I'd give that a shot first.

No actually I haven't. I don't have any of the tools to do that. The buddy that hepled me with this has the tools though. We kind of talked about it tonight, and he is going to see what he can come up with. I am just trying to get a few other opinions.

I agree, it would be much easier to just tap the existing hole with the current sized tap.

Cool, thanks guys. my buddy has the bolt and is working on getting the same sized tap from people he works with. I was just afraid the flange material would be too thick or too hard to tap. I will let you know how it goes.

which headers are you running ?
the header flange is threaded ?
normally the bolts pass throught the header flange and your secure them with a nut or the studs are pressed into the header flange , I have had to use smaller bolts and havent had a problem , or you can just use a longer bolt and put a nut onto it . or if you are unable to tap the flange braze a nut with the proper thread onto the flange.

your talking about the header flange to h-pipe bolts right ?

I am running the MAC shorty 1 5/8". Yes I am talking about the header to H-pipe flange. what it is, is the bolts come up through the bottom of the H-pipe flange into the header flange. The bolt has a perm. nut attached to it. I even tried using a new bolt, of the same size, and it would only go in about 1/4" also. Thats what led me to believe the threads were stripped/cross-threaded.
