can i mess this up not knowing what im doing?
i want to change the speedo gear i received in the mail. tellm if this sounds right sd to what i am going to do.
1)jack the left front end up with the small *** stock jack 2)find the cable that goes into the tranny? 3)unscrew the bolt that holds it in 4)pull it out gently 5)find the other gear, pull it out and replace it 6)reverse everything else Am i missing anything or is this it? Never done this before so I thought I would ask if i could ruin something before i try it! Thanks, Jim

Yep, it's that easy. Should only take you a few minutes.

clip
It's been a few years but I think there is a little clip that holds the gear onto the cable. Use a small flat head screw driver to pry it out...and try not to fling it across the garage.... Oh yeah, and those jack stands would be a good idea.

Given the choice, I just wouldn't change the gear without stands. I seen one guy die this way. It's just stupid.

I'll NEVER climb under the car without jack stands under it. ~Brian

stand
I'm sure he just forgot to mention the useage of the jack stands. I can't imagine anyone trusting a floor jack that much...at least I hope not!

Had a buddy who got trapped under a stang that way. He used jack stands up front, but propped the backs on bricks. He was lying lengthways on his side under the engine/tranny area. Bricks crumbled, the car hopped, and the front came off the jack stands. He couldn't scream or anything as his lungs were smashed. His brother heard the noise and came out and got the car off. He was very luck that he only had some really bad bruises and maybe some cracked ribs and a dislocated AC joint.
I've been changing tires when those stock cheap-butt scissor jacks let go. Would hate to be under the car. --nathan

Here's a tip: It's more conventient/useful when changing a tire or doing brakes but it could work for this situation also. After taking a wheel off, put it on its side and slide it under the car. I've also had that scissor jack fail on me.

definately use jackstands, you can go to sears and get two three ton stands and a 3 ton jack (non scissor) for around 100 bucks, they have a sale once in awhile. . . once of the best buys you can do for your car and more importantly yourself
