you may be thinking of a cooling system pressure gage. This is a very useful tool when trying to find coolant leaks. You pressurize the system to normal operating pressure (16psi for our cars) and then if you have a leak, you will be able to hear it, and feel for it without being burnt from hot engine parts, or getting a finger ripped of in the belt
