Default Can wrong Timing cause backfiring?

Can wrong Timing(to advanced/retarded)cause backfiring? Whether its a backfire from the intake or exhaust?

Yes it can but usually you are way off on the timing at that point. I would take the dist back out and put the motor on #1 top dead center, aim the dist at #1 plug and drop it back in. Hope this helps.
