Carb size?
I've decided that my current carb is beyond repair. It's dumping huge amounts of gas into the engine, fouling plugs, idleing high, and just being a pain in the @ss. Had the floats replaced and it worked ok for a week or two. Now I've decided to just buy a new carb. The current one is the one in my sig (Carter 625cfm elec. choke). I can go one of 3 ways. I can get another Carter 625 elec. choke, I can get a standard Holley 600cfm elec. choke, or a Holley 600 double pumper. Any comments? I like the adjustability of the Carter but I wonder if I'm over-carbed. The cam in my sig measures .493"int. .500"exh. lift dur. @ .050" is 218*int. 224*exh. See the signature for my other mods.

I have a cheap holley 600, electric choke, single pumper, single metering block, and a similar setup. It works good. However I would like a 650, but I can't prove it to be better yet. I think a 750 might be to big for street torquem, however might be good for track.
I would try a 650. However my time is from 600 and I have good street ability. ------------------ 82 Mercury Capri 302. Comp. Cams Tremec 3550 3.73's 12.8@106 N/AKevin's Capri |

A 600 will work but you will probobly be a little faster with the 650.

I took a step back , and looked at my combo; the whole picture. I picked up a 600 edelbrock, mechanical secondaries. The car feels alot stronger now than with the 650 Holley. I was definitely over carbed, and i have a little more done than you do. The 600 is the way to go for ya. cheap too, i spent $230 for my carb.
PS Edelbrock and Carter are pretty much the same carb, and you get that great adjustability with the edelbrock like you had with the carter. ------------------ 12.54 @ 110.90 1.62 60' best with old car, will let you know once i finish the transfer to the new to me car I have pictures now, and here are the specs [This message has been edited by 86LX5liter (edited 02-24-2001).] |

How about one of these 625cfm Road Demons? Those things look bad @ss. Would this still be overkill? I'm down to the Road Demon 625cfm and the Holley 600cfm DP.

I was reading that a 650 dp was too much carb for a 5.0 street motor. The 600 cfm should be adequate. Besides can't the jets be changed to slightly larger if necessary??

a holley 600cfm would be the way to go. if not holley then dont go to anything bigger than a 600. that would be too large

common everyone sing with me "holley sucks! holley sucks! holley sucks!" I had 2 600 cfm holley carbs both went bad within the year. Got an edelbrock got dirty once a quick clean no problems in 2 yrs. Still looks nice and shinny. Anyone want my holleys lol ??? Oh yeah and the edelbrock saves gas!!!!

Tried many different carbs and Holley are best for me so far. Parts are cheap, easy to adjust, easy to find and can be completely torn down and rebuilt in less than 45 min.
Get a regular 600 vac sec Holley. Should be plenty for your car. If that is totally out of the question then maybe the road king 625 Demon, but I haven't heard a whole lot about these yet. I truly don't see a need for a dp. I've seen many cars running 10's with vac sec carbs n/a. ------------------ 1988 GT-under construction |

But if I'm gonna get an Edelbrock, why not just get another Carter? They're the exact same carbs. My budget is kind of the rule here since this carb won't be in my car too long and I'm not looking to dump a bunch of money into something that'll only be on till the summer. Come this summer I'm going with a new injected motor. I just want something that won't foul my plugs anymore and won't idle at 2000rpm.

Holleys and Demons are great carbs if you know what you are doing with them. Edelbrok's are good if you want an out of the box easy to adjust carb, but for performance it's hands down Holley or Demon. I have run all sorts of carbs from Quadrabogs, Demons, Holleys and Edelblocks. Edelbroks look easy and are appealing to people who can't tune holleys but as for being better.... Not even close! As for size a 600 or 650 will work for your application. A 650 will keep you from buying a new carb once you do some more upgrades without being to much now.

Right on RUSTANG... 86LX what problems did you have with Holley? You haven't convinced anybody that they suck by simply stating that they suck and were all supposed to trust you...I have had very good luck with them.

What kind of tuning will I have to do to a Holley/Demon? I'll be doing this with a professional Ford mechanic so I don't think it'll be much of a problem. I'm shooting for the 625cfm Road Demon.

All this holley bashing is totally senseless. Not to pee in anyone's wheaties, but usually the only people that diss holleys are people that cannot diagnose/repair/setup holleys. I've run holleys on EVERY car I've ever built, (and in 47+ years there's been plenty of them), and Holleys have kicked *** in every one of them.

Holley is the way to go if you want performance. They're not that difficult to tune, parts and upgrades are easy to come by, and when tuned right will out perform an Edelbrock (which is a new version of the Carter AFB). Not to bash the Edel though because it's a good carb too, but I've always been a Holley kind a guy! I'd recommend the 600 vac. secondary with an auto., or a 650 d.p. with a manual trans.

Well no one is chewing out anybodies taste for carburators. I do agree with everyone that says that with a holley u get better performance. But that performance comes at a high cost. Having to retune it every so often and the reason for the extra performance is because of the extra gas being pumped inside. Which in turn means less gas milage. It just depends on what you want. I chose the edelbrock/carter way others chose the holley way. I personally like the jet it and forgeted approach. If I want some extra umph I take out my bigger carb and slap it on and of course it's an edelbrock. So much esier to work on and less weight.

fostang-what do you have? car/engine/combo? So with Holley...you get better performance, at a higher price...so in other words you get what you pay for-lol? Hmmm...well...for those of us that do have lots experience with Holleys know how easy they are to get parts for and can usually find good cores to rebuild at swap meets for damn near the price of a couple Burger King Combo Meals. I recently picked up a used 600 Holley 1850 for $50 at a local swap meet and paid $20 for a can of carb cleaner and a rebuild kit-did it in less than an hour and now I have something I can tune to fit my car perfectly for cheap as well as perform well.
I guess mileage has never been a problem with my Holleys. I mean I guess we used a Holley 700 dp on an 10 sec 79 Camaro and yes that got bad gas mileage-but I think it had to do with the roller cam that had up around 600 lift and 242 degrees of duration with 4.56 gears and a TH350 combined with the fact that the carb was not designed for a mileage friendly street car. I got 24 mpg with a 351 and a 600 Holley in a 82 Mustang doing 65 mph with a C4-no overdrive. That doesn't sound too bad to me. ------------------ 1988 GT-under construction |
