Cats but No Smog Pump

My smog pump on my 89 LX 5.0 is squealling bad and I think is locked up - prevents the motor from running. I have 186,000 on my cats and I would like to remove the smog pump so I can drive it where I can work on it at versus where it is sitting now. Will it's removal hurt anything if the cats are still in place? It is the stock pipe with stock cats.

This will only be a temporary solution until I can find one in a junkyard or something. I just want to make sure it will continue to run in the mean time after the removal of the smog pump.

Thanks.

I have had my pump off for years. Get a shorter belt and go for it. Dan

So the smog pump being off and the cats remaining doesn't hurt a thing?? (other than emissions)

I wouldn't have guessed that.

Running cats without the pump will clog them, I think. I don't know how you could be running for years w/o them clogging.

or u could just dump the smog pump AND the cats

I was debating on 86ing them both, but I just added another job to this mess.

A smog pump is also called an air pump, what it does is pump air into the cat converters to break up the hydrocarbons, when you take your smog pump off, the hydrocarbons are more concentrated then they should be and due to the higher flow of hydrocarbons, your cats will get clogged over time. If you want to keep your car street legal, driving your car for a month or so with out one wont hurt, but if you dont care about being street legal, yank it off, and get an off road h-pipe...

or if you don't want to have to shell out for an off road H, just gut the cats. There's more than one way to gut a cat.

Whatever you do don't gut the cats and leave the air pump and egr hooked up. Had my gutted cat pipe glowing cherry red cuz the computer was leanin it out.
So there's more than one way to gut a cat huh?

The smog pump only works during warmup, the rest of the time it dumps overboard and robs power.

I was also thinking about getting rid of the smog pump and cats on my 88GT. What is the part # for the shorter belt.

actually, the kid that had this b4 me left the smog pump on, even though the cats are gone, is there a shorty belt that bypasses the smogpump available?
