changing trans fluid... need help

Ok, In a little while I'll be changing my trans fluid, and I bought a new filter and gasket. I want to drain the converter too, and clear the trans cooler out of most of the fluid. How do you drain the converter? And how does the fluid get back in there? Help me out guys! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif

Please go into as much detail as possible. THanx

Depending on your converter, it may or may not have a drain plug. Remove the lower block plate from the transmission. Its the thin aluminum plate that bolts to the front of the bellhousing down by the oil pan. You should be able to roll the motor around from the front of the crankshaft (pull the plugs and put the tranny in neutral). As the flexplate moves around, look for a plug through one of the openings in the flexplate. Its usually a square-headed plug. Unthread the plug then roll the motor around till the plug hole is at the bottom and the converter will drain. If there's no plug, then the only way to drain the converter is to pull it. The converter will pump itself up as soon as you start the car after you've refilled the transmission. To drain the cooler, GENTLY blow it out with dry shop air. Set your regulator real low, like 10 to 20 psi.

Hope this helps.

wow, that sounds like a gigantic pain in the *** . If I just draing the lines and the pan, how much trans fluid will need to go back in?

Depends on how much comes out. Keep track of how much you draing then put back enough to bring it up to level on the dip stick before you start the car. Start the car and keep topping it off until its where it needs to be on the dipstick (shift it through all the gears). Then check it again after it comes up to temperature. Don't overfill.
