Default cheap mods for big gain

i'm about to get a 98 GT, 5 speed manual. i know it's the slowest generation, but i'm getting a good deal, so i'm goin for it.
of course no one wants a slow mustang, so i was wondering what are some mods i can make to get my HP around 260-270.
Can anyone help me out? jus tell what parts to get and about how much it'll cost me (nothing over $500 please). btw i don't care if the mod is illeagal.

If you dont care about ozone you can run a MAC xpipe with no cats. Were talking $250 for about 20hp.

Also if you look around you might find a NOS kit for $500 and that will probably be a 100hp shot. that is the absolute best bang for the buck you can ever find

3.73 gears...I have a 98' 5-speed, that's what I wish I woulda done first. It won't give you any extra HP, but it will help you reach your powerband much faster.

I don't know about mustangs, but I've heard a 4.6L F-150 w/ straights, no mufflers, only cats. It's sounds really good until you top 4000 rpm's...then it starts cracking really bad, sounds like junk--especially when it revs back down.

that cracking would be the lack of backpressure on the exhaust system. Will help you on High RPM HP, but prob won't do much for your TQ figs, may actually make the car run worse off the line...

Open exhaust on the street is usually only good for one thing....

It is a moved exhaust leak, but it sounds like it had a real exhaust leak. Just putting an offroad X or something isn't going to make it crackel really bad. Unless it was a really low HP car and it desperately needed the back pressure.

Blue01GT,

There is now way that an off-road x-pipe will give you 20 horses, 8 to 10 at the very most. You know what I'm sayin...

i have seen off road pipes sell for all kinds of prices, with or without cats.... without ranging from 100 bucks up to 200 and with cats from 150 to 600 bucks, i have a bbk off road pipe without cats for sale if you are interested, i will sell it for 65 bucks.. contact me if you are interested.. since i installed an x pipe and catback, i no longer need it, my buddy put it on his 00' gt but didnt like it, so he went borla, of course we get stuff all the time here at the dealership for free,so we try things out...hehe
