Default Cheap GT40x heads, should I buy them

Hey guys, some of you know I have been looking for some aluminum heads for a while. I have a set of Gt40 heads (FMS-M-6049-X303) that I can get my hands on for $550.00 or best offer. After looking these up FMS it looks like they might be perfect for my set-up. They are suppose to only have 6,000 miles on them.

Right now, I just have e7's that are nicely home ported. I am not looking for a drag car here, but I am looking for a nice gain in horsepower and weight reduction. With the performance numbers on these heads, would I be stupid to pass this deal up or should I just pay a little extra cash and get some trick flow or edelbrocks?

Keep in mind, my 5.0 is a fresh block and is going to be in there for a while. So buying a head to match a future combination is not an issue right now.

One thing that is holding me back, is the chambers on these are suppose to be 64 cc, and I assume that is gonna lower my compression a little compared to my e7's.

The goal for this car with the current engine, is to get it to run low 13's to high 12's. I have no idea how close I am right now, cause it rained when I was planning on running it.

Now I am kind of not sure. My buddy that has helped me for years thinks they would not be much of a step up from my ported E7's. He wants me to hold on to my money and get a set of AFR 185's or edelbrock rpm heads. Dilemmas!

The X heads flow 250cfm, how could that not be much of a step up? Your heads would flow about 200-210cfm max

Tmoss-
I agree with you, he seems to think my heads are ported that good. But if that was the case, I would think everyone would just run the home ported e7's.

230cfm is the most I have ever seen out of ported E7s by a pro..........and 20cfm is significant if you can use it.........

Tell your friend to put the pipe down. I had super bad @ss ported E7's and picked up exactly 50 RWHP when I switched to the Canfield aluminum heads.

buy the heads and enyoy your new power. the gt40s have larger valves, port volume, and less weight. it would be a good choice

My car is away for the winter now ,and I wouldn't mind trying a set of decent heads.I think our setup is similiar,my e7s are ported and shaved,of course it would be nice to score a set of gt 40s at the junkyard, I would try a set of those i think first. If money grew on trees new afr's would be my choice.

Anyone remember the combustion chamber size of the e7 head? How much realistically can I shave the 64 cc gt40x head to get some compression back?

down to 58cc - that's what mine are, 58.5cc - smaller if you can maintain p/v clearance.

all heads have a "spec" cc but they vary if actually cc'd with a burrete.

Check your PMs bro!

Don't forget, you can play with head gasket thickness to get your compression back.

The other thing I don't want you to forget is about your "system." Is your cam/intake gonna like the new heads, or will they work better with what you have?

This is a tough one dude, looking for some links for ya right now..... standby......

We need "the flow chart" that has been posted here 110 times, but I can't find the darn thing...... New computer, lost my bookmarks, long story...
