I've broke a Zoom cable and a stock Ford one. It was cheaper for me to buy an aftermarket one than a stock replacement so I got the one from Hayes. I've learned that it's usually exhaust heat that snaps cables and it usually happens the first time you drive your car that day after it's been weakened by the heat and then is cooled (both of mine snapped near the tranny end of the cable and I had the firewall adjuster in both times). I re-routed mine so that it is now as far away from the exhaust as I can get it without it binding.
