converting to 4 corner idle...worth it?

I'm considering converting my Holley to 4 corner idle. Is it worth it? I can have it done for $55

Re: converting to 4 corner idle...worth it?

Are you having difficulty getting it to idle?

Re: converting to 4 corner idle...worth it?

Well....only one idle mixture screw works. The other does nothing. It also seems to run rich at idle. I think the transfer slots are exposed too much.
Plus, with 4 corner idle, I'll have that much more adjustability...

Just my $.02 ....

Ummm, YEAH! :D

Ok, then I'm prolly going to have it done then.

If only one mixture screw is working, you've got other problems.

A 4-corner idle system feeds the rear cylinders a little better, allowing a more even distribution. Is it necessary? No, because any advantage disappears by about 1500 to 1800 RPMs. The disadvantage is you have four mixture screws to adjust and synchronize, instead of two.

If you want to do it, do it! :)

I just don't want you to build up your expectations.

My question is what would cause one side to work and the other to fail?

A clogged idle air bleed.

Is this something that will get "fixed" when I send my carb. off to have the 4 corner idle done or should I tell the guy I have a clogged idle air bleed?
BTW, I'm not looking for any performance gains from this. I just want some more adjustability. I should get better idle to main circuit transition. Some people claim to get a little bit better fuel economy out of it but I'm not looking for that either.

Let the guy know which idle circuit is inoperative, and ask him to make sure all four corners are working when he's finished.

This generally is a worthwhile operation for carbs - but who is going to do it for $55 bucks?

I do um and there is no way I could do one that cheep and make any money on the rebuild, let alone the labor involved, much less the parts, shipping etc.

I know other carb companies and they won't touch that operation for less than $125 labor plus parts.

Does the carb have holes in the butterflies?
This is almost imperitive if you have a bumpy idleing cam that has to idle above 1000 RPM. Otherwise the idle speed adjustment screw is open too far and that creates a draw on the boosters and your way rich. Then some guys try to adjust the rear throttle blade and get it too far open and then the transfer doesn't work correctly.

But converting your existing carb over is less expensive than buying a new one even if you have a Professional Carb Shop do it for you.

The guy I bought it from is going to do it. He already quoted me the price. I will have to pay the return shipping though but this place is in my same state though.
He's a guy on Ebay the rebuilds/sell Holley carbs. and he's really good too. Would you like to see the email he sent me that proves he'll do it for $55 plus return shipping? Not everyone out there is greedy! There are a few people still out there that do the work they do simply because they love the work they do.
Would you like the mans name? I wish there were more people like him that were not worried about just making a buck or two.

Thanks for the info - 82-GT

Best of luck with that project

As far as the price goes - unfortunately I have to pay overhead - I have equipment payments, rent, utilities, and what not after that I have to support myself and put gas in my truck, since I earn my living porting heads and fixing carbs - so I don't think that what I charge is necessarily greed - I have to charge what I charge in order to pay the bills. Of course if I was just doing it for fun to practice and I had a full time job, then of course I might be able to lower the price. However if your guy is going to include the parts he's actully doing the labor for free.

By the way your avatar is kool

Denny,

17 posts to date, and I've seen about 10 of them. Seems like you know what you're talking about, and I think you'll bring some good info to us and this board.

Welcome aboard!

Brian, I like the 4 corner idle adjustment just for the simple fact that you can "dial in" the carb alot better. As a matter of physics, the 4 corner cylinders (1-4-5-8) tend to be a bit "lean", and idle screws on the back help out #4 and #8.

Again, just my $.02, but PKRWD is the resident Holley Guru! When the Scarelane is done, I'm sending my 850 to his house! :D

Re: converting to 4 corner idle...worth it?

I think the guy who's doing it is probably retired from the business. He claims, in his ads, on Ebay, that he's been rebuilding carbs for over 30 years. I get the "feeling" that he knows what he's talking about just through his emails.

Head Doctor, I wasn't implying that YOU were greedy. I'm sorry if it came out that way. I understand about overhead cost, utilities, etc..
I wasn't expecting to hear $55 either so that's when I assumed that he's doing this as a hobby on the side or something.
