Couple questions on 87 5.0
Ok first question is what is the stock gears in a 87 gt 5.0 mustang i thought it was like 4.11 or somthing i dont know. Next question is what does a 87 gt 5.0 run in the quarter stock? Last question is how much horsepower does it have stock? THanks in advance.

Your mustang most likely has 2:73 or 3:08 gears. There should be a sticker on the driver's door jam that has the axle code.
Tell me what it is and I'll tell you what gears you have. All '87-93 GT's have 225 hp and 300ft/lb of torque and average between 14.8-15.2 in the quarter. Some even a little quicker but rarely.

5 spds, 14.6-15.0 aod's around 14.9-15.3
Now speed density gt with a 5spd and advance timing and good traction can see low 14's.

The 93's were rated at 205hp, a little less than the older brothers of it's kind due to the piston change, I beleive there was a cam change also. Just my $.02

now sure about the cam, butwhat do you mean whats the stock speed? I also believe that manuals came with 3.08 rear end gears and aod's came with 2.73's but i may have that backwards.

As far as the cam goes, it's a hydraulic roller with .444 lift.(I forget the duration).

faster than you ever need to go!!
With my 2:73 gears I've been up to 145mph. I wouldn't recommend going that fast because it's scary as hell and the brakes are not good enough to stop in a hurry if you would ever need to. I did it out of pure curiousity and stupidity.
There is no need at all to be going that fast on public roads.

We all wish
that our stangs came with a steep gear like a 4.10 (4.11 is a cheby gear ratio) but the sad fact is yours don't .and as far as top end goes it is limted with a fuel shut off !( even for a speed density car like yours) don't quote me on this but it's like 127 I think . see that 82 did not have a computerized shutoff yet ,thats why he was able to attain a speed like that ,also you have a tag on the outside of your rear housing (pumkin) that will tell you your ratio . 3.27 were an option on the police modles , but if you have an auto ,you have got the worst gear ratio there is ,2.73:1

Nailed doing 135 in a 45??? Good lord that's rough. Fastest I had mine up to was about 130 on a highway racing a Lightning and the Lightning blew by me But that is reading from the speedometer not a radar gun. The speedo is probably somewhat inaccurate at that speed.

It is at 6250RPM and with 2:73 gears you will never hit that in 5th gear due to aerodynamic drag I think top speed in these cars depends on when the horsepower being put to the ground equals the friction forces in the opposite direction. or with new gearing like 3.73's or 4.10's you might hit the 6250 RPM shutoff

the 87-93 mustangs didn't come with the fuel shut off switch. Most modern day euripean imports come with a switch that stops gas flow if the car goes over a certain mph, usualy around 130. The only think like that hte mustangs have is the rev limiter, which only cuts off fuel at a certain rpm so you don't throw a rod threw your hood. Top speed is dependant on drag and how much horsepower you have. drag's main factor is weight and what the front of your car looks like. as we all know the fox body's were that aerodynamic but they have enough power to get them up around 140 anyway. I had mine going 135 at 4000 rpms up the highway, but 4th gear has alot ofpower over 5th. I would say there was maybe another 15 mph in 5th. It really depends on how much power you can actually put into wheels.

stock 87.... here is my fastest slip, and this was the last run i took, and it kept gettin faster....1987 Gt 5.0 5spd w/ 't-bar'
60' ... 2.15 330 ... 6.25 1/8 ... 9.62 1/8 MPH ... 70.83 1000 ... 12.53 1/4 ... 14.94 MPH ... 91.65 completely stock, even with a dirty air filter, and most likely super old spark plugs, dunno if either would make a difference.. |
