![]() Finaly took the car to the track. Never was able to get a clean run. But when I crossed the line I looked down at the speedo and seen the oil pressure drop down to "0"
![]() I immediately turned the car off and towed it home. I drained all of the oil and it looked clean with no shavings. I pulled the distributor out and then dropped a magnet down and pulled the oil pump shaft out. It broke at the very end of the shaft where it goes into the pump. I am going to cut the filter open tonight and see if it did any damage. Is it possible to remove the oilpan and change the pump with the engine in the car? I dont think it would damage the main bearings cause they were still in a oilbath even though the pump went out. I am going to cross my fingers and hope for the best. Any advice?

![]() Dark - I don't believe that you can do the swap with the engine in the car - or if you can you're gonna have alot of bloody knuckles!
![]() I would pull the motor (really not that bad to do) and install an ARP shaft. Prior to the breakage, how was the car running? I haven't heard much about it lately. Take it easy, E

![]() I was told on this website that it could be done. I was told it would be a tight squeeze, but after you jacked up the engine enough, you could rotate the pane and replace the pump. the shaft, of course would go down through the top of the engine.
I ended up towing mine to a shop way back when, so I didn't actually do it. Good luck. Abel

![]() I dunno if it's any consolation, but if you were close, I would give you a hand with the work.

![]() I needed to repaint under the hood and replace the cowl panel anyways so this will be a good time to do it since I have to pull the engine.
Is a windage tray a worthy mod while I am in there?

![]() According to Al Kirschenbaum you'd recoup approximately 10-15 hp by installing a windage tray. The parasitic drag of the oil bath on the rotating assembly at high RPM's is something to consider.
I also think you can get at the entire oil pump assembly and shaft w/o r and r'ing the motor, but it would be tight But, if you have already decided to do so, cool. Good luck...

![]() Done this! Yes it can be done. take off the motor mount bolts, jack up the engine as high as you can go. Drop the oil pan (won't come out of the car yet!) then drop the oil pump into the pan. Weasel said oil pump and drive shaft out, weasel new oil pump and driveshaft in. Definitely go with the ARP bigger driveshaft.

![]() It can be done, I did it.
Unbolt the tranny mount, unbolt the motor mounts and jack the motor up as far as you can. Drop the pan and lay it on the K-member. Drop the pump and replace the shaft. It's simple. -Josh, aka the tireburner

![]() I had that happen once. When I took the pump apart I found a piece of aluminum stuck in there. You might want to do some investigating.

![]() I cut the oil filter open and I had to look really good to find anything. I found 2 glitter sized pieces off copper.
I drained all of the oil and poored it through a paper towel and found nothing. I imagine what I found is normal for a filter with about 100 drag strip passes and no daily driving.
