did i damage my t-5? help!
Im worried, i was bolting in my new t-5 (newly rebuilt) by myself, it was hard, anyways, i bumped the tail part up under by where the 4 shifter bolts hold, and chipped a chunk of aluminum or alloy whatever it is small though, but now there is some black foam looking stuff sticking out, i guess i can j.b weld it, but can i live with it? cuz nothing can leak out there, im just worried it will make that one bolt that holds the shifter weak?
never attemp this t-5 install by yourself on a gravel driveway, i had hel1. ------------------ 90 lx coupe: 175k miles, steeda water pump pully, hurst shifter, Mac cold air fenderwell, accel supercoil, ADS chip, aluminum D/S, Black magic fan, 3.27grs. Black Foam???? Is this Permatex that was put on to seal the shifter to the housing? If all the threads are there I guess it will be OK, but can you get a picture so we can see it. I am not a fan on JB WELD but if you think you can do that to build it back up then try it. I personally would tear it down weld it up on my Tig Welder and drill and tap the hole again, but I most likey would have to dis-assemble the tranny, to properly weld it up. The case would need to be heated then welded cast aluminum can be tricky at times.
I have done the driveway swap of the tranny, I bet that gravel is a PIA. What I do in my garage is jack it up as high as I can get it then I install the cross member to the tranny, I tape up the shifter hole then I bench press the tranny up into position (that bastard can get heavy), then once I slide a bolt through the cross member I put the jack under it, get the crossmember all bolted up, install the driveshaft and stuff then I fill the tranny through the shifter hole and then install the shifter. ------------------ Check Out My Site 91GT,Holley SysteMAX II Kit-Heads 2.02" x 1.60" port matched to a 1262,Anderson N-61,24#,76mm C&L,Full MAC exhaust 1-5/8" Long tubes,2-1/2" O.R H-Pipe,2 1/2" cat back, No A/C or PS or emissions, 12" K&N Filter,RNH PERFORMANCE Ram Air,Ron Davis Radiator,Full Suspension,S&W 8pt "X" brace,JAZ seats,3:73's,Welds..etc,4:30's and 31 splines coming very soon! I just took out my T5 last week. Definately not fun, but with the help of a good friend, it wasn't too bad.
As for the black foam...well, I'm not really sure what this could be? Maybe what Rick said? A pic would help us give better opinions as to whether or not the JB will suffice or not. E ------------------ 1991 5.0 LX Coupe - 38,000 miles 13.17 @ 106.14 mph w/ 2.138 60' |

No pic necesarry, i have it driving again, thank god, i was missing my car badly, but i did JB weld it, just put a dab of it on the break, no problems that i know of, and that black foam, or rubber stuff has to be the sealer like you said, he did use some black stuff for the shifter, but the break is further down? oh well no threads broke out, dont see any reason to pull it down and weld, it's working just fine, i guess i panicked...as always thanx, you guys are great
