Does the afermarket chip make a difference?

I was curious if the hypertech or the saleen chips actually make a difference if so how much and how. Is it worth getting.

The answer is, no.

i'll second Mr 5 0 here, no. on a stock, or near stock motor (anything short of heads) a chip does nothing. if you are going to get a chip (because you have a lot of mods) get a custom one.

My chip made a difference.

But with all my detonation problems, I have not run the car without it and advanced timing. If it has the same kick as advancing the timing, I'll post here (hopefully soon) and then you can decide where to spend your money.

But from 8* timing it did make a difference...

The custom JMS chip I have in my car made big difference too. No more detonation at full throttle and the pedal is alot more responsive. I guess depending on what mods you have on your car would tell you if you should get a chip or not.

My response assumed Silver 5.0's Mustang is near-stock as he didn't list any mods.

For a highly modified engine such as yours, a chip will make a difference and is usually worth buying, especially if dyno calibrated.

I regret any confusion on this point.

I have gears headers,mufflers,fuel pump,regulator,suspension mods.

In my 88 gt a chip made about a car length difference. A friend and me raced before and after the chip, we were dead even before and I was about a car in front with it. You could defiantly see it pull harder when we were side by side but it was not anything you could feel. This was on a speed density car so I don't know if that makes any difference.

I've spent quite a bit of time on the dyno in varying states of modification and about the most we have been able to make with a chip is about 4hp. For a N/A combination, you're just not going to be able to do much other than fuel enrichment and timing. You can handle both those with a good ignition/distributor and an AFPR. Right now, the only thing my chip is doing is extending the rev limiter to 8000 and shutting off all the annoying emissions functions. Everyone's mileage may vary, so to speak, but my experience has been that there's just not much to be gained. Unless you've got the EEC god himself in Mike Wesley at your disposal, I think the money is better spent elsewhere.

I will say though that there is more potential for the chip to do some good with a late model 4.6 than there is with the 5.0.

I disagree. I had a '88 Mustang GT, bone stock. Here's what it ran (60', ¼-mile et @ ¼-mile mph) with original "Gatorbacks" that have been on the car since new - over two years before these runs were made.
  1. 2.424, 14.923 @ 94.868
  2. 2.305, 14.551 @ 95.612
  3. 2.302, 14.609 @ 95.135
  4. 2.223, 14.484 @ 93.217 <--lifted to avoid breakout
  5. 2.260, 14.569 @ 94.763

A year later, same tires, even more wear on them. BUt this time, I had a Hypertech Power Module installed as the only mod:
  1. 2.489, 14.772 @ 97.756
  2. 2.482, 14.853 @ 98.039
  3. 2.315, 14.312 @ 98.303
  4. 2.286, 14.502 @ 97.645
  5. 2.372, 14.513 @ 97.507
  6. 2.524, 14.765 @ 97.987

On average, I picked up 2¾ mph in the quarter mile.

ETs didn't improve because of traction problems. Look at the 60' times. On average, they got worse in the second set of runs because of the worn tires.

There were a couple other factors to be taken into consideration:
  1. My timing wasn't set at the stock setting of 10º advanced. It was only about 6-7º actually. So the chip probably only advanced it to something close to the stock setting.
  2. Like a ricer, I really didn't know what I was doing, and I used that high-octane race gas they sell at the strip in both these trips. Race gas in a stock, low compression street motor without a lot of advanced timing isn't going to help. If anything, it slowed by down.

I realize it's a completely different engine in a completely different application, but my F-150 was orgasmic when I installed a JET chip 3 years ago. Unfortunately, it recently started to cause a minor cold start problem, which ultimately was solved by removing the chip. It was at this point that I realized just how much that chip did. I used to be a skeptic, but I'm a true blue believer now.

Take care,
-Chris
