Double clutching & other ways to shift
 
Should I learn how to double clutch? Will my car benifit from it? What other methods of shifting should I learn?

What is double clutching? I have never herd of that.
Have you ever tried power shifting?

Double clutching is something you would do in a road race, not drag racing (except on The Fast and the Furious).

Double clutching is good if you have bad synchros or something.

I double clutch my Freightliner simply because it's not synchronized. Double cluching your car isn't really needed.

Double clutching is when you press the clutch once to bring the tranny out of gear. And then release the clutch with the tranny in neutral and rev the engine to bring the tranny main shaft up to a speed that is "synchronized" with the output shaft of the tranny(which depends on what gear you are shifting into and how fast the vehicle is going) You then press the clutch pedal again and put the tranny in the next highest gear. There is absolutely no reason to do this unless your tranny grinds gears with the clutch in. That is what a synchronizer is for. It slows the main shaft of the tranny using friction to the same speed as the next gear when upshifting (because your engine RPMs will drop after entering the next gear) And speeds up the main shaft when downshifting. You can hear this on most older T5s with worn synchros when downshifting say at about 35 or so into second gear. You will hear a whinning noise that changes pitch as pressure is applied to the shift lever to engage the tranny into a lower gear. Anyway, that's probably way more discussion than you guys wanted, but hope that helps.

ahh the ol double clutch! Well i have to use it now cause my synchros are out. But in my 67 mustang i "speed shift". My dad said in the 60's and 50's if you speed shift you could shift faster than an automatic tranny. but that doesn't work today. I still speed shift when i street race. WARNING! this can be very bad for ur car unless ur good, but to get good u gotta practice! here is how ya do it - when ur racing and ur going to shift from gear to gear ( u gotta be fast *** though ) keep the pedal to the metal (floored) and push in the clutch just enough to shift and then pop it out. But if ur not quick enough you will float the valves or maybe even throw a rod or something. if ur good then it is just has good as an automatic. at 16 i have been known as the fastest shift in the south!
