Is double clutching the same as...?
Is reving up the motor between down shifts and not letting the clutch out when you hit neutral the same as double clutching?
|
what are you trying to say?
|
What the hell is double clutching anyways? Why do you have to push the clutch in twice inoder to shift gears?
Isn't that a ricer thing?   |
Do a search on double clutching. I think PKRWUD posted a great explanation. It's something you do if you don't have synchros or your synchros are on the way out. It's not a ricer thing although ricers think they need to do it since The Fast and the Furious is their bible. It's definitely something you should NOT do during a drag race.

Its shifting from 5th to 3rd...
You basically are letting out the clutch in neutral (before going into 3rd) to help they syncros line up... [sort'a quick layman explanation] |
Whenever I drop 2 or even 3 gears... I never have to let the clutch out in Neural. They just line up without problems.

That stuff started with that stupid ricer movie. Double clutching needs to be used only for a trans with no synchonizers (or bad ones) like are used in the big rigs. The procedure is to pull out of the current gear with the clutch in, stop the shifter in neutral, let out the clutch, rev the motor, then move to the next gear. It really is an outdated procedure. The big rig drivers shift without using the clutch at all once they are rolling. Years ago when I was driving, I got where I could upshift or downshift through all 13 gears of a road-ranger without using the clutch. Only time I'd double clutch is if I missed a gear. Incidentally, you can do the same thing with any syncro transmission, although I wouldn't advise it. John.

So If I have a 90 mustang I don't need to double clutch to down shift? If I rev the engine to increase rpms and I down shift smoothly I am not hurting anything? Correct?
Thanks for clearing this up! |
Double CLutching
What I've been told by many people, one person I listened to deffintly was my grandfather who used to race cars alot. Double clutching would be like...Shifting down from any gear into nuetral, leting the clutch out, reving it a little above where the gear you shift into next would catch at that speed, and then quickly downshifting into the gear. Double clutching actually wears less on the clutch. This Double clutching actually synchronizes the flywheel with the rest of the tranny. Therefor the flywheel and clutch are spinning closer in speeds which promotes less wear on the clutch. Hope this helps.

So the real question is...
1) If we don't have to use it anymore because we have sync. trannys. 2) It takes longer to do. 3) and our tranny and clutch can handle it What is the purpose in doing it? It's kinda like turning the motor over with a hand crank.... we don't have to do it, so why do they (the ricers) talk about it like it's some big deal? I was talking to a bunch of kids one night and they were talking about they were going to spray their 4 cly trucks that is 100%stock. They were talking about double cluching, so I called them on it... not a single person could tell me what it is.... Silly kids... |
