I had to with my BBK EL shorties. Only for the passenger side though.

I had to on the passenger side as well. The drivers side I didn't have to.

I also had to get bigger header gaskets. I believe they were the Fel-Pro 1516.

how long did it take to put the headers on, and would it be easier with the h-pipe off the car?

It took about 1 1/2 hours to put the headers on (including breaks). That passenger side is a bear!

We tried putting the headers on both ways and it was ultimately easier with the h-pipe off.

Default Header install without motor jack

I was able to install a set of the BBK headers without lifting or jacking the motor. The passenger side involved the removal of all of the EGR lines, but it was no major issue. You just have to rely on some manipulation and positioning of the header correctly into the tight area. This was on a 94 5.0, tricky, but doable. Get all of the EGR components out of the car and you are on the home stretch. I found the drivers side to be more difficult. One friend working the header from the top of the motor will help a great deal. In fact, I don't believe I could have completed the task without his help. If you have any additional questions....just let me know.
