EGR valve question?
 

The EGR has been bad since i bought the car. I just verified this tonight because of the EGR code and because it wouldn't open when vacuum was applied to it. The previous owner said he'd put on several EGR valves in the 5 years he had it. Here's my question:
Is the EGR valve on the '87+ 5.0L's a common fail item?
He also mentioned he bought used EGR valves so that's probably the problem, but i was just wondering if anyone else has had to change their EGR valve a few times.
I'm also interesting in hearing from people who have never had to change their EGR valve.

I've replaced mine once, but it wasn't necessary (found out it was the EGR regulator causing problems instead). What a lot of people don't realize is that the EVP (EGR valve position) sensor that bolts onto the back of the valve has an O-ring to seal in the vacuum. When the dude swapped valves, I bet a quadrillion bucks he didn't replace the O-ring OR the sensor, and just bolted on an entire 'assembly' without checking it first. The EVP itself could also leak. You could buy each item (valve and sensor) then experiment at home to determine what's going on. There's always the real good possibility that yes the EGR valve IS bad. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/wink.gif

You're absolutely right about looking for other strange things. I knew when i bought the car i'd probably find some surprises. One of those turned out to be a hastily and shittily assembled power wire to the voltage regulator (Which i, "conveniently" found out 1/2 before i was supposed to be at work). He did some stuff right, be he was cheap in alot of ways. I'll probably go ahead and replace the EVP sensor while i'm at it, since i'm back there, i can almost garauntee that even if that's not the problem itself it could be part of it, and i don't like doing things twice. FIXED IT!
You were absolutely correct Capri306, thanks. The idiot who owned the car before me didn't even put on a gasket on the EVP sensor to the EGR valve so there was no seal, and as a result...no vacuum inside the valve. I had to buy a new EVP sensor for $20-something dollars, and a $1 EGR gasket and my car was driving and pulling better than ever. Thanks again,
