post install of electric fans
Hi
I got two electric fans that I want to hook up along with an adjustable sensor sensor from hayden. I would like to see where you guys installed the sensor. The sensor cannot be dipped in the water as far as I know. Thanks

I have the Black Magic thermostat and it goes into the upper radiator hose. Aren't they all like that?

The last one I had had the temp sender insert into the radiator inbetween the fins, at the bottom. Very risky with an older radiator. Very easy to cause a leak.
Take care, -Chris

In between the fins? How'd that work on a cold day?

Wouldn't it work better if I installed it on the elbow by the thermostat? Also is it possible to cut it off and use the sensor that acts as a water temp. sensor. The one that actually measures the water temp.
Thanks dudes but still no pictures.???

Not sure what you're asking. 2fast- It went from the engine side of the radiator through the radiator, at the bottom. The fan isn't necessary until the bottom of the radiator gets warm. Take care, -Chris

So you put it by the inlet hose at the bottom of the radiator. How is your temperature, you have any problems running it hot? I'm just trying to find the best spot for the sensor.

This was 4 vehicles ago, but no, I never had any trouble at all. In fact, that same setup kept a '64 Ranchero with a built 306 cool with a little Pinto radiator! That still surprises me. Anyway, yeah, I feel the fan t-stat works best on the bottom of the radiator. That was how they always used to instruct you to do it, but now they have it stuck into the rad. inlet, and that's not accurate. I can guarantee you the temp there will be pretty much what ever your t-stat is. I think that is pretty stupid, but who knows. I'm sure they have some reason for doing it that way. I won't, but you can.
Take care, -Chris

Fan rarely comes on anyway, my thermostat came with my electric fan, and just sits up against the radiator, i'll go look where, i think about the middle of the fin area, not through it, it doesnt have to be through, run a cold (160-180) t-stat in the motor, and your fan will only come on at idle anyways.

So I went over everything and came upon a yellow wire which is supposed to be connected to a 12 volt hot connection so even when the engine is not running the fans will still go. Ignition has to be on ofcourse. Where did you guys hook it up?

That's pretty pointless. Hook it to the battery, not your ignition. If the fan feels it needs to be on, it can't come ask you to go turn the key on. Besides, that way it continues to cool down while you do whatever else it is you're doing (ie: This summer you go cruising with the guys, and stop at some burger joint for lunch. By the time you're done, the engine is cooled and ready, and you didn't have to tell your buddies to order for you because you had to wait while your fan cooled your engine).
Take care, -Chris
