Post WTF Transmission or What???

My friends 97' AODE mustang is acting up. My diagnostic is the transmission since the problem only happens when it switches into over drive. It all started a few weeks ago but had not done it since until today that we went out to the mountains. Whenever the overdrive would engange it would start to pull back and forth as if engine power was shutting off and comming back. The RPM's didn't vary and the check engine light didn't come on. What could it be? Usually happens at 1100 rpm.

As for my 67' I bent a push rod everything is ok now, replaced it and ran so much better I was amazed. I think it had been previously bent because after I did my head switch it never ran the same. Maybe I put it in wrong and bent it. I was so pissed off for a long time that performance had dropped instead of improving. The final day for that push rod was when I raced a chick in a 99-01 stang. After that race my engine was making a clinging noise and I eventually looked into it and it was a pushrod.
