eliminating power steering?
hey.
I am having troubles with my power steering it is leaking or something but whenever I make a turn it's making noises. so I'm thinking I should just get rid of the power steering. how would I do this? get a smaller belt right? Has anyone done this before? how does it feel driving around without power steering? also, it's an 91 5.0 lx AOD would 4.10s go good for this car? thanks |
I bought a forward rotation water pump. Then I removed the a/c, power steering and smog pump and used a short belt around the outside of the crank, alternator and water pump.
I also had to buy a forward rotation flex fan. Easy money and its not that bad to steer. My car is only a track car;) Later, |
power steering
Been there, done that. When my steering rack starting leaking I got rid of the PS pump and then ran open lines from the PS rack. Put it up on stands and turn from one side to the other to drain the system. It was extremely hard to turn and I hated it. That was with skinnies on the front. Then I switched to a manual rack from Autozone and used a Flaming River steering shaft. It is very easy to turn now and even my wife doesn't complain about it.

I drove my buddy's '89 GT that had a bad P/S pump and the stock rack and it was extremely hard to turn, especially at low speeds (I'm 5'10", 190lbs, and work out in case you need a reference). If you want to go manual steering definitely get a Flaming River rack if you plan on driving it on the street.

you don't need a flaming river rack in my opinion. They are super expensive and you can get similar results with a manual rack from Autozone. I just chose to use the flaming river steering shaft so that I could eliminate the rag joint in the stock steering shaft. The rack was $109. Here is a picture of it with the steering shaft.
