What's the correct way to install oil galley plugs, the press in type. I had one on my 5.0 that worked it's way out, when I tapped in another one, it was a pain to get in, but once it was in, it slipped right out. So I'm doing something wrong. The best way is to tap thread in the block and install screw in plugs. RAY

so I wouldn't have to drill the original hole out if I were to tap it for 1/4 npt? Has anyone actually done this while the engine was in the car? Maybe if I stuffed a small plug of paper towel in the hole first to prevent any metal shavings from getting to the lifter and lifter bore, and used some grease on the tap to collect the shavings, it could be done?

No I did it to my bare block. RAY

Threading them in is the best way, but if you don't want to do that then just tap it into place and when it is in, take a screwdriver or chisel and deform the edges of the block around the plug a little... this will hold it in place and if you ever have to replace it again it can be fixed...
