Default the worst thing happened!!! bad.

Well I sold my 88 lx to my friend and he has had it for about a week. It needs a rear main seal and he knows that. Well today I went over to his house and he told me to listen to it because it was ****ed up. It sounds like pushrod tapping three times louder. I told him to look how much oil was on the dipstick. I was like 2-3 inches above the full line. He then told me that he added like two or three quarts of oil because he though that it was burning oil bad. Well it must of not been burning too much oil if it was that far over the full line. He didnt even check where it was on the dipstick before he filled it.
This really makes me mad, because I loved that car and I didn't want to get rid of it in the first place. But anyway we were trying to figure it out and someone said that it might be the main bearings, but I dont see how adding too much oil would screw them up. Also we took the valve covers off and he started it and no oil was flying out(shouldn't it be flying out?) And through the small hole in the head were the oil is supposed to come from smoke comes out of it.

If any of you guys could tell me what it might be, it would help me out allot.
thanks.

I would drain the oil completely and put the CORRECT amount in. If you have a magnet let the oil drain over it as it flows into the pan. It will pick out any metal and tell you if its a bearing, which I doubt.

What is the oil pressure? If it was filled up extensively the crank was probaby hitting the oil. Drain it and refill it first, then go from there

im sorry I forgot to mention that we did drain the oil and put the correct amount in and it is the same as when it had to much oil.
He really screwed something up and I want to know what it is but have no clue at all

Oil should come out of the hole in the rocker from the pushrod. On a cold engine, I've seen it take 2-3 minutes for oil to squirt out of those holes. Sounds like you do not have oil pressure at the cam, or possibly none at all. What does the pressure gauge read?

it only has the stock oil pressure gauge in it and i don't know what it reads, I will have to ask him tomarrow.

Could it possibly be that the oil pump stoped working and it is too late to save?

Hook up a gauge and see if you have oil pressure. If not he may have snaped his oil pump drive shaft. Its actually pretty common on 302's. If that is the case ARP makes a hardened one for like $10.00 but have fun putting it in.

would the oil pump drive shaft be making a loud ticking noise though?

no the shaft wouldnt be making the noise, but the lack of oil on the bearings, rockers, and other moving parts sure would make alot of knocking

thats happened to me before, and it destroyed the bearings. So check the pressure, and if there's none, then its time to pull the motor, replace the bearings, oilpump, pickup and shaft. And inspect the crank for damage.
