Default Engine gurus..Please help!

Ok...I'll try to make this as short as possible...
Last night while cruising home on the highway my car suddenly started acting like one of my plug wires was arcing to a header or something. No backfiring, but a definate loss in power, and that "putt-putt" type of noise you'd get if you weren't running on all 8 cylinders.
Well, checked my plug wires this morning and they all look fine, and none of them were anywhere near something they could possibly be arcing to.. When I got to work this morning, in addition to the car running badly I noticed a loud tick coming from the passenger side valve cover. I had always had some valve train noise, but nothing as loud as this..
Could this be a valve, lifter or rocker arm problem?
My oil pressure "seems", (stock guage), ok.
Anyone have any similar experiences/advice?
Sorry for the long post. Many thanks in advance!
Nick
