Equal or Un-Equal

what header is better:

Equal Length

Un-Equal Length

It depends on what kind of setup you have. If your car in mainly stock, go with un-equals.

If you have the patience for installation and plug changes, equals will make a little more power and are the optimum of the two. If you have the room, long tubes will almost always make the most power, but either equals or unequals are a great step up from the lame stockers- just go with a quality brand and a good finish coating, add a stainless h or x with hi flow cats and a nice 2.5" cat back and you will get years of good power and sound.

Actually that's only true on cars with moderate mods. Equal length headers scavenge more and there for rob some power over un-eguals on a fairly stock motor. IMO equal lengths are junk, and if you want more power out of headers go with longtubes!

I posted this exact poll and question two weeks ago. I had a set of equals for free and went ahead and swapped out the unequals for the equals. I haven't been able to drive it all all after the swap because the headers didn't mount up flush to my H-pipe. Well, I just happened to have a off-road X-pipe laying around that was the two peice, so I put it on. The leak got better but still not there yet, now I am looking for a trailor to borrow to bring it up to the muffler shop to fix for me. This was supposed to be a routine header swap. CRAP!
If you go with the equals, I found it to be an easy install by unbolting the passenger motor mount jacking up the motor about an inch on that side, the driverside went in smooth. Good luck to you

Equal length headers are not junk. I have BBK equal length headers and did the install myself. It really wasnt that hard and they perform and look great.

Many 10 second cars have equal length headers on them.

If you think equal length headers are a pain in the @ss try and install long tubes.

The mistake most people make is putting 1 5/8 inch equal lengh headers on a stock engine when they should have went with 1 1/2 inch headers to maintane there low end torque.

It's not worth the hassle

Un-equal for shure ! the difference in H/P claims between the 2 are just not there . And If you were going to go all out ,you would put full length headers on anyway ;) Plus the fact with all the headaces, and B/S with the equal (plus price ) it's just not worth it . back in the day (we thought ) that was the way to go , before everyone started to make full length. but if your not putting out more than 400 h/p ,your don't need them ,and you'll have less tendency to kill something . With all the full lenghth's out there I would see the equals fading away eventually;)

Later,

I agree with you to a certain extent, but my motor was fairly stock, and i went 1 5/8 un equal and got a nice gain, i dont see gaining much topend staying with 1 1/2, it would be a waste of money to me, most of my racing is done above 5k anyway, lowend loss was very minimal that i cant feel launching at 4k.

equals are my plan when i get ported e7's

Dont buy into the BS that equal length headers are hard to install. I did mine myself and it took me 4 hours and I was really taking my time. Long tubes dont make much more power than equal length headers and with the equal length headers you dont have to replace your H/X-pipe.

The drivers side header drops right in, You have to remove the bolt from the passenger side motor mount and jack up the engine to drop in the passenger side header in.

Don't ever

Say< that UN-EQUAL legths are junk ;) There are some many Manf. out
there ,that have nice stuff ( UN-EQual) is the way to go . If you don't
like the way the rusty OEM looks . Get a new 5.0 mag. Cause thry have
about 100 new bolt-ons and half are UN - Equal Headers :D
