Putting in clutch pedal after starter install now produces very high pitched whine
I just installed a powermaster starter (mastertorque 9603) to cure some starter issues (it's looking more and more like a battery issue right now) and when I started it up, no problems (I have no clutch saftey). When I put the clutch in for the first time, a really high pitched whining sound like a table saw (but higher pitched) happened and persisted and changed tone with pedal travel and stopped when I let the clutch out. Obviously, I driven the car in last night with no such issues.
This is probably interference with the starter gear, right? I should take that piece of junk back? It took me ALL DAY of pure unadulterated misery to put the starter in and I dont feel like repeating it for no reason. so if you guys can give me your .02 on what you think is happening. Did I just "machine" down something by accident? I DID rotate the starter inside it's housing (it's supplied with 5 holes either side of the starter and 2 hex screws). It engages without any like clunk or other interesting noise.

ok so I bit the bullet and took the darn thing out and now I'm totally stumped. Rotating the starter made no difference because it doesnt change where the gear is in relation to the faceplate and putting in the upper bolt would have been impossible because of the upper dru of the starter. That piece on the left I found while removing the starter.... no idea. The ring gear looks a-ok, just the normal 100K miles plus wear though I cant rotate the engine right now obviously. I took the dust cover off the transmission and that looks fine from there, the pressure plate has all it's fingers and nothing screams out at me. One thing did scream at me. The front plate of the bellhousing (the flat aluminum plate) has a section missing.....tada...right around the starter bulb. The bottom half of the "circle" is missing and it did not come off with the old starter. Still cant figure out what's wrong

Pried back the dust shield and nothing floating around the bottom so I sighed and put the puppy back in. Makes the chirping "eee eee eee eee eee" sound intermittently and revving the engine makes it go away. I thought about it some more and if there was _any_ starter/flywheel contact then I would have been sweeping up pieces of my ring gear and the starter teeth and starter face wouldnt have been that clean. This leaves a piece of mystery debris in the pressure plate. Question is can this 300 hp machine grind up a small piece of rusty metal or will the piece of metal be it's demise.....
