Default Failed emissions - Help!

Our project 88GT failed emissions. My son just got back and failed 3 out of 6 tests - inspector said car was running real rich, here are the stats from the printout:

15MPH 25MPH
Limit Reading Result Limit Reading Result
HC ppm 180 181 Fail 174 1293 Fail
CO% 1.01 .70 Pass 1.12 3.44 Fail
NO ppm 1378 844 Pass 1258 684 Pass
RPM 1834 Valid RPM 1789 Valid
DILUTION 14.65 Valid DILUTION 15.13 Valid

VISIBLE SMOKE INSPECTION: PASS

Car has complete MAC exhuast with long-tube headers, and cats. Original O2 sensors - could this be the cause?

Any help is really appreciated!

Things to look for in this case are the vacuum lines, EGR, and replacing the O2 sensors is basically a given. If they are 15 years old, they are definately way overdue for replacement.

I'd replace the O2 sensors, clean the injectors, make sure the EGR isn't plugged, check the vacuum lines to make sure they are in good shape, and head back.

I would also check the fuel pressure, and make sure the engine is as hot as you can get it for the retest.

Take care,

Neat little "cheaters"

I agree with changing O2 sensors, that is a huge must.

Go to Autozone/checkers whatever, buy a gasoline additive its named "guarenteed to pass" or something along those lines. Pour it in, run through a tank of gas, fill it up, and go back to the testing site.

Drive the car alot, get it hot as possible before the test. When waiting, keep it running.

There is one more trick, but I don't remember it exactly. Something about removing something. If you want email a guy named PJ, his address is mynewrx7@hotmail.com - Just say you were referred, don't say who cause he won;t write back! Its my exboyfriend. He has an RX-7 that failed emissions a couple of times.

The only other thing you can really do is replace the cats, but you shouldn't need to.

hope this helps.
