Arrow this just started today(oil pressure)

normally i get about 37psi on hot idle and 50 at 1500 and above. yesterday i was driving and the more gas i gave it, the more inconsistent it would be. it would jump from 25 to 50 and everything inbetween. any ideas?

these are brand new autometer electric gauges. not stock.

My oil pressure did that for a couple of days then my oil pump locked up. It could be the same thing in your case.

A-wooo ouch, might pull your sender and screw in a manual guage right at the block and leave the new system hooked up. Compare the two readings, see which one make the most sense. Is the motor making noise? Did you thrash it hard last night? It is possible to have a oil pump go bad, very common especially if the engine is a high miler.
I hope it is the new guage going bad and not tyhe pump, much easier to fix.. Mac

I agree that you should verify the problem with a mechanical gauge before you do anything else. It sounds like a sending unit problem to me.

Take care,
-Chris

Had the same problem. Replaced the oil pressure sending unit and it was fine. It is on the driver's side of the motor ahead of the header. It has one wire coming into the top of it. Unplug and screw it out and the new one back in and plug up. At least this worked on my 89.

after reading more and more on it, i am going to have to side with the oil pump. if it was the sender, than wouldn't it jump around at idle also? also the more gas i give it the worse it gets. since its mechanically driven...?

i still plan on checking the gauge though.

How's this scenario sound:
It may be the oil pump pickup screen getting clogged. When you rev it up it sucks more oil through, causing particles to wedge harder into the screen causing oil pressure to be erradic. I had this problem with a 318 once. The guy I bought the truck off of thought RTV Blue was supposed to be used in 1/4" beads on EVERYTHING. The screen was so plugged you couldn't pull the sh!t out of it. Needless to say it thrashed the engine a couple days after I bought the truck.

Before you drive it any more find out what the hell it is!
