Ok I've been thinking this through I was reading a few posts on useing a light flywheel versus a heavy flywheel for launch etc.

Then i got to thinking isnt the flywheel balanced to the crank with the harmonic balancer ?

I was looking up sfi flywheels and found one company that has the same part # for automatic and standard I always thought the flywheels used diffrent surfaces and the auto had the bolt pattern for the torque converter ?

just someting ive been working on . i might get mine turned or by a new lighter one for the twin turbo set up. If i can go with a lighter one. :p

Is your engine rebuilt and fully balanced? If so, and the machine shop balanced it by drilling the flywheel, you might have problems. If it is stock and newer than '81 you will need a flywheel with a 50oz imbalance. Older 302's used a 28.2 imbalance. I think a lighter flywheel is a big advantage in the mustangs. The only problem is the price! As for the auto and manual having the same part number, sounds like something is wrong there.

Lite weight flywheel
 

Flywheels store mechanical energy.A liter flywheel doesn't take as much energy to turn(energy=Horsepower)So I guess you'd have more horse power avilable to power the car.I thnk some types of racing req.s a heavier flywheel,ie oval track racing?
I've hard pro's and con's about lite weight flywheels... :)

Hehehe, our Sprint car doesn't even have a flywheel!

Here is what I know about flywheels. If you have a light car, than you can get away with a lighter flywheel. Here's the logic. The flywheel stores energy from the engine. and then transfers it right down the line to the tranny. Now, a heavy flywheel has the ability to get the heavier car moving. If you have a heavy car, and a light flywheel, you will have to rev the piss out of it to get it moving, even during normal driving. So think long and hard about it. The gains from a light flywheel will not be worth it in a heavy car.
