Flywheel
I am about to replace the clutch and flywheel in my stang, but I am not sure what I should do. I drive the car everyday to and from work, in and out of traffic. I want to speed it up, but I don't go to the track much. Do I go with a lighter weight stock weight or a heavier weight flywheel? The heavier one will help my launch, but slow my acceleration down right? So then the lighter wheel will help me accelerate, but I'll loose more RPMS on the launch... Right??? What have you guys/girls done??? When I change the flywheel and clutch I am also going to put in 3.73 gears so will I even need the extra acceleration??? Is the stock one good enough??? Will an aftermarket flywheel hold on better to the clutch???

If you can wait about a week or so, I should be able to give you better feedback. This weekend I am installing an aluminum Fidanza flywheel that weighs just over 11 lbs. Along with the new flywheel will be a King Cobra clutch, pressure plate and Tremec 3550.
The lighter flywheel will allow for quicker engine revs, but I will also lose lower rpm torque. In my situation, I think the lighter flywheel is best because I hardly ever drive my Stang, I have horrible 60' times on my drag radials and I don't really need all of the torque at low rpms. I am really starting to think that I have no idea how to launch my car since I my best ever 60' was a 2.06! What do you guys think about the flywheel situation??? Heavier, Lighter or stick with stock???

Without getting into the physics of it, a lighter flywheel will allow you to launch at a higher RPM (than a heavier flywheel) and have similar (to the heavier flywheel at the lower rpm) wheelspin, SO YES, you want a lighter flywheel.. basically, spinning up a heavier disc with 300 lbs/feet of torque will spin your tires easier than spinning up a lighter disc would.. so, you get to launch at a higher rpm, and that gets ya better times, higher et's, etc.
For each pound of weight taken off of the flywheel, SUPPOSEDLY you gain 2.5 RWHP (but, that's just what I've heard, I don't know, but that # seems a bit high) Also, I got my flywheel lightened about 2.5 pounds, and I noticed faster revving, but no real loss of torque, if anything, it felt a tad bit stronger.. but that was only the first time I drove it, I got used to it right away.. ------------------ 94 GT (triple black) FMS 9mm / 95 17" Cobra R's / AL Driveshaft / 3.27's K&N, 12* timing, MSD Coil, 180* thermostat, 190 lph MAC Shifter/Gauges/Pedals, Euro Clear Projectors & Corners My CAR! |

Thanks for the reply... thats great news I think... I can't see why I would loose torque on the low end... Looking into the dynamics of it shows I would gain HP and Torque... thanks for the reply...

You will not lose low rpm torque. It will maybe produce more power at high rpm's( like underdrive pulley). It will give you that impression on first gear because the flywheel will change the way your clutch grip. If you're running slick's, it will put less shock on your drive line parts.

Problems with the Ram unit??? I am thinking about the Centerforce flywheel to match my Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch... I think I should stick with one company when buying parts that need to work together... right???

My new aluminum flywheel was made by Fidanza Flywheels in Perry, Ohio. They make several different flywheel models for many applications. I have heard very good things about them and that's why decided to buy one.

Fidanza aluminum flywheels are on sale right now through Rohe Racing for $290, I think. That's what I paid. John Rohe is a very nice guy. He will help you decide what is best for your setup. Also a very knowledgable man when it comes to Mustangs. I believe that the stock flywheel weighs around 25 pounds. When holding the two flywheels in each hand the weight difference is tremendous! The Fidanza weighs 11 pounds. I am hoping for 1-2 mph gain out of the flywheel. The less rotating mass, the better on the engine bearings and the quicker the car will accelerate. I have heard of mildly modified Mustangs like mine gaining nearly 30 RWHP. Not sure if this is totally true, but worth a shot! Good luck, E |

Everything got installed this weekend - only one little problem that I'm dealing with: a bent stud bolt that goes from one of the header flanges to the H-pipe flange. Should be getting a new bolt tonight or tomorrow. Then I can fire her up! I am so pumped about the whole setup. The steel blow-proof bellhousing just looks killer under there with the Tremec.
