Fuel Economy

Been quite some time since I posted last.
Not long after I sold my Basket Case of an 89 GT, in fact.

Well, I'm looking at another Mustang.
An '84 with 5.0 Liter and manual trans.

As Insurance & fuel questions are more immediate concerns, I haven't bothered or even had the opportunity to delve much deeper into the vehicle's equipment.
(I.E. if my insurance is too high and or I have to spend too much money on fuel every week, I can't justify buying the thing)

I think the car is most likely bone stock with only cosmetic alterations. So I'll use Stock as a baseline.

So my question goes out to those of you running similar vehicles (83-84?) as every day drivers
Approximately what sort of fuel milage are you folks getting?

Thanx

I can't imagine that the mileage on an 84-85 would vary too much from the fuel injected foxes. Just as a ball park, I would say to expect 22 or so on the hi-way and considerably less than that in town (depending on driving style, gears, etc.). If I am stictly in town, I probably only get 13 mpg or so. But, on the hi-way I can see 24 or so. Those numbers should at least get you in the ball park.

It will either be carbed or that CFI horseshhit. Dont expect more than 15 avarage. If you want fuel mileage, I suggest you get a newer Mustang or a Metro.

I've been able to get 25 mpg out of a carbed, 3.73 geared mustang. How? Casual driving style, weight reduction (to the order of 400 lbs), underdrive pulleys, a good ignition system, good tuneup, and leaning the mixture a tad. Dont worry about nosediving your milage from a carbed car. _You_ are in charge of setting it up properly but it's not a big deal and you can get very comparable results to FI. If you do end up with a CFI monstrosity, toss the top and put a holley back on. You'll thank yourself once you start making changes to the car.

Thank you, Gentlemen. Very helpful.

Ackbar.. "Eww" to the Metro and "Too Expensive" to the Newer 'Stang. (while I didn't like the current style at first, it has grown on me) ;)

As well as a Driver, I'll be using the vehicle as a Test Mule for some Alternative Fuel ideas that I believe will be very Up-and-Coming in the next five years or so.

(I hope I don't get the same reaction to that as I've gotten o anothe r Automotive forum I visit.. You'd think I suggested to those guys that they should all buy CRXs)

My aim is to prove to certain persons of my aquantance that it I IS possible to operate (in this case) a '60s Musclecar cleanly, safely and above all (again, in this case) without power losses.

*After doing the numbers on my '94 Mazda B-4000

You mean to tell me that a V-8 Mustang gets better mileage than my V-6 Pickup?
Interesting.

(Granted the truck isn't running up to par at the moment.)

I suppose the Ponydoes have considerably less drag, and has smaller diameter tires..
