Default Newbie needs help

Hello everyone
I need some help here.
I have a 1988 Saleen coupe, the only mod I have done in the past 4 years is add a K&N filter.
I have Mass air and 3.55 gears.
The car wont pass smog and I've been told I need a new exaust system.
So heres the question, I got 1K to spend on mods
Does anyone like Bassani?
What Mods should I get including exaust.

Help...
I NEED MORE POWER..

88 coupe

P.S. The car has 60k miles on it

The cats may be shot, the O2's may need to be replaced, all kinds of other issues could be the culprit of failed emmissions.

Once you get that figured out, we can work on the 'NEED MORE POWER' issue you have.

Enlighten us as to the mods on an 88 Saleen. Is it mostly suspension related? Or, are there major engine modifications? This will help us point you in the right direction with regard to the $1K you have to spend.

Acording to the build sheet there are no engine mods.
Short ratio shifter, 3.55 gears and a bunch of suspension and body mods.
the car originally came from Cali so it has mass air.

The O2 sensor was changed.
The car seems to do well on the mecanics test machine, but once they drive the thing on the Dyno at the test station it fails.
( of course I get some booger eating moron that doent know how to shift it every time)

My thoughts were to replace the cats.( bassani cat back system?)
Thats about it.

This really shouldn't matter as your dyno pull should be made in 4th gear. The tech should just easily shift throught the gears until he gets to 4th with the RPMs low, and then once the dnyo goes green, he should just nail the throttle.

I've heard that BBK also has nice Catalyic H-pipes. Any other opinions?

Well here in wonderful oregon the DEQ tests this paticular year on a Dyno type machine.

They drive the vehicle onto the machine and keep the MPH to the set curve.( kinda like a sine wave ), As usual they dont really know that the car is geared low (no matter how much i tell them)
so the RPMs are allways high.
so It fails
I will look into the BBK exaust.
I was hoping to do the following

1. headers
2. exaust ( from the headers back)
3. Pullys
4. Air meter and throttle body

Your thoughts?
What kind of HP gain should I see from this ?
Equal lenth / or short headers? pros and cons?

Thanks for you responce so far.

A complete exhaust system will net you around 10-15 HP on a stock motor - maybe more, every setup is a little different.

Equal-length shorties will give you slightly more HP (scavaging ability) but will also be a little more PIA to intall. I have BBK equal length's, BBK off-road H-pipe matched with Dynomax 2.5" super turbo muffs with the stainless steel pipes. I really like the sound and the quality is very nice, IMO.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. This is a great site with great members and moderators. Enjoy your stay!
