Unhappy Fuel Pump Replacement

Well, I did the search, but I can't find anything that tells me how to replace a fuel pump in an '88 LX 5.0. Help?

well, first you put the car on jackstands, then you disconnect teh fuel lines running from the tank. Unbolt the gas tube (where you put gas into the car at) from the tank and then drop the tank by dropping the two metal straps that hold it in place. If there's gas in the tank, then you're definately going to want a second person to help you lower and raise the tank. It can be done with one. After you have the tank off the car, use a brass dowel to turn the lid until it can be pulled off. Then pull the pump out, disconnect it, connect the new one (probably have to splice two wires) and reassemble the opposite of dissasembly.

I think I am going to have to replace my fuel pump in my 88LX 5.0 as well let me know how it goes and anything special you had to do!

Just put a 190 in our stang - hardest part was lowering and raising the gas tank as it was over half full. I believe gas weighs 7lbs per gallon so it was heavy. The instructions in previous message were right on.. When you get your new fuel pump it should come with instructions as well.

What size pump are you putting in?

I had a mechanic put in a 255 lb pump about 6 weeks ago. Last week the thing fizzled out on me. So next week I'm gonna put another 255 lb in myself. Hopefully it will last a little longer.

Just to add some info. Disconnect your battery!! No need for any stray sparks near gas tank. You should empty the tank, but you can lower it by yourself by using a floor jack with a piece of plywood under the tank. As you loosen the retaining straps, lower your jack. The toughest part I remember was pulling the filler tube out of the side of the tank. I would replace the clips on the fuel lines going into the tank. My pump didn't come with these clips, but any decent auto parts store should have them. Look in the HELP section (you know those little parts in the red packages). Unless you trust your Ford Dealer, DON'T go to a dealer for these clips. I waited 4 days for the wrong (insert your favorite explitive here) clips. Luckily, the Car Parts store down the road from my house had them sitting on a shelf. Not sure why the pumps are burning out so fast. What brand pump did you buy? Oh, replace your fuel filter while your down there. It only takes about 2 minutes and makes a big difference.

I haven't yet bought the pump, I was kind of waiting now to do a search and find out what everyone else is gravitating to. The number of "pump burned up quick" stories was a little disheartening...

I love my car, all I want is for it to be happy!

My Walbro pump has worked like a champ since day one. With any parts you buy, there is always a margin of bad parts that leaves the factory. The reality is that MOST of the stangs with aftermarket fuel pumps don't have any problems pending the install is done correctly and the factory didn't sell a bad pump.
