Gas Eater

What kind of gas mileage are you guys getting? Somone was talking about having 3.73's with a AOD and getting 20 miles to the gallon. I've got the same thing, and I'm getting nothing near that. Also how much does changing gears affect gas mileage, like going from 2.73's to 3.55's?

89FHPLX 01-17-2001 12:11 AM

I go 370 miles with a full tank. I have 3.08's. My friend has 3.73's and he goes 285 miles with a fuel tank and it's a killer in the city. If you want gas economy but you also want performance, I like the 3.55's.
That's my suggestion. Remember, the higher the gear the quicker you go of the line, but you pay the price for gas.

Never noticed much of a change with the 3.73's myself. Probably because I didn't hit the gas as hard to accelerate at the same rate when in snore mode.

Fox89GT 01-17-2001 02:56 PM

Do those police packages have larger gas tanks? The most I can get on a tank of gas is about 250 miles and thats with only fumes left in the tank. I usually push it to about 220 miles with about an eighth of a tank left. I installed 3.55 and did not see a difference in mileage. This is with a 21 tooth speedo gear also.

What is the size of the tank anyway? I lost my manual but I'm guessing only about 14G.

Yeah Fox89GT, My gas tank is almost 14 gallons but spilling out. That means full to the max. I keep my car tune good, even driving it with 14 degree timming. the most I put in of gas was about 13.6 something.

I have a 5-speed and I went from 2.73 to 3.73 and didn't notice a big drop in mpg.

OOppps my total gallons would be around 12.4something. And going from 3.08's to 3.37's has made my friend car have poor gas mileage. But goot off the line

Jaydee 01-19-2001 10:26 AM

Running 3.55's with a 5 speed - 16 to 18 city and about 22-23 highway crusing at 70 mph - none of these numbers apply when the car is driven shall I say, more aggressively

My manual claims that my car has a 15.8 G tank. I also have 95 GT, not a Fox.

I'm hoping to get gears this summer, I want decent milage (pushing me to the 3.55's), but I really want to dip into the high 13's (pushing me to 3.73's). If I go with 3.55's, I'll need more than pullies and a good tune to break into the 13's. What a dilema. I think I'm going to have to drive a car with 3.73's and see what it's like.

Sounds like I am doing much better than most of you. I have 3.73's and get 25-26 on the hi-way consistently and have gotten as high as 29. When I am strictly in town though I see about 13-14 mpg.

How do most of you check your mileage? I see many people saying they get xx miles to a tank. That is not too accurate.

I fill up my tank then reset my trip odometer. Then when I fill my tank up again, I know how many gallons I put in and can check to see how many miles I went using the odometer. Then just divide the miles I went by the gallons I put in. Sorry if I am insulting anyone by explaining this...just thought I would mention it since so many people seem to be commenting on what they get per tank.

I've got 3.55's and a whole bunch of mods, bolt on and interior, and i think i get between 12 and 16 miles per/gal. on the highway. depending on the day.

I probably get about 12 miles to the gallon on average. I know I'm getting less than I used to before the gear change, especially since the exhaust was done. I don't think it has much to do with the gear or exhast as much as that I am incapable of allowing anyone to beat me off the line or out of the toll both. It's hard to drive a car that sounds tough and feels tough like your trying to conserve gas. I've got a 14 gallon tank and I've never gotten more than 230 miles out of a tank (about 15 to 16 mpg) unless it was a pure highway trip where I might have gotten 20 or 22 mpg. Usually I go about 150 to 190 miles on a tank of gas.

If you're in one of those states that uses Methonol in the gas in the winter, your milage will suffer too. I get about 27 mpg in the summer and 23 mpg in the winter. With the Methonol it takes more gas to do the same job and it seems to burn cooler too. I noticed if I fill up in Wyoming where they don't use Methonol my temp gauge reads right in the middle. If I fill up in Colorado my temp gauge reads between half and a quarter depending on if I'm on the highway or city. I have a 5 speed with 3.73's.

I have a AOD with stock 273 and I get just about 27-29 on the highway (as long as I do not pass to many people) http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif and 18-20 in the city.

I agree with Heathj you have to do that method to find out your real mileage, you can't go on what you get to a tank.

At about 80mph on the freeway with small 225/50 tires and 3.73's w/ a 5 speed I get right about 19-20mpg.
