"power" or "clutchless" shifting

Can someone here please try to explain exactly how to shift without using the clutch. I have heard people say "just jam it into gear" and others say that it has to be timed correctly. I would like to know before I blow up my tranny.

I fried my clutch in 6 hrs of bumper to bumper traffic coming back from Atco raceway Sunday. I wish I knew how to shift w/o the clutch for the future so I don't have to drive 10 miles in first gear. Thank you!

Powershifting is holding the gas to the floor while upshifting using the clutch. Clutchless shifting involves matching the engine speed to the speed of the main shaft (or is it the tailshaft?) of the transmission. Since your tranny is syncronized, pull it out of gear and wait for the rpms to drop to what they'd be at for the same speed in the next gear and it should pop right in. If it grinds then your either too high or too low. I never use it in bumper to bumper traffic though, too much tach watching.

Yep, you definitly have to be at the right rpm for it to work. If I was you however, I would just use the clutch, but I can see where your leg would get tired in heavy traffic.

Hey RPM - how did you like the races at ATCO? My 17-year old son and I went to scoop out the cars and watch some wild racing.

Did you see the camaro run off the track? That's what you get for racin a chevy...

I can't explain why, but my experience in NASCAR taught me that synchros actually make it much, much harder to shift without the clutch. That's the main reason why they don't use them.

The reason I was interested in clutchless shifting is becuase my clutch stopped working in the traffic. I had to drive from my friends house in first gear, without stoping. I didn't want to try and shift.

That pro mod car had its parachute tangled up and went into the woods, the driver was fine. Someone is getting a tounge lashing.

Did you see that 2000 cobra R miss 3rd and slam it into reverse? Everyone cringed. The reverse lights came on for a second then he coasted over the line. ouch.

Saw the reverse stunt - and the hood blowing off - dude kept on trucking and believe he won the race to boot!

Pro 5.0s didn't do much on Saturday - but Glidden ran pretty strong on Sunday.

I went back to the pits after "big daddy's" hood flew off. That camera man must have sh*t his pants. It came a few feet from taking his head off. The crew was really pissed as would I. The whole cowl was bent up and all messed up. I was wathching them try and hammer it out.

Also, did you see the Pro mod car go into the woods at the end of the track going 200 mph? The chute was all twisted up and did not deploy. He was OK, I wish I could say the same for his car. It was just an exibition run too.

Here's a thought on the cluchless shifting being more difficult w/ a synchroed trans.

With a synchroless trans, only the gears themselves are required to 'line up' before reaching the next gear. They probably use angle cut gears.

With synchros, not only the gears are required to line up properly to reach the next gear, but all the teeth/gears of the sychro must line up as well. Making it much more difficult to achieve a straight line.

Then again, I could be wrong.........

No, actually, that sounds right. I had it explained to me, but since I wasn't the tranny guy, and had a lot on my mind already, it didn't sink in. Plus it was over 4 years ago.

Im not sure why but my mustang isnt the friendliest cluthless shifter.

My old 94 Integra did it pretty well, and my girlfriends 97 eclipse is a brease, I can drive it around with no clutch almost as easily as with a clutch.

Heres a trick, when you pull it out of gear and are going to shift into the next gear, hold the shifter so its pushing on going into the next gear, but hasnt fallen in yet, and give the throttle a blip to throw the revs up. As the revs start falling down and match up to the right speed the trans will slip into gear, given that your still holding pressure on it.

Works great for me.
