Default Gears!

Okay- I've decided that my next mod will be a Ring and pinion set.

First, has anyone bought from places like West Coast Differentials, or National Drivetrain, or should I just get them from Summit or someone like that?

Second, which? I mostly drive the car for my own shits and giggles. I don't bracket race, or even really plan on going to the track. If some idiot pulls up next to me at a light, I will light him up, though.

I may run some highway miles, but no more than 100 miles/week on the highway. Usually, the car is parked in the garage until Friday night, and goes back into hibernation on Sunday. The car will NOT be driven in the snow.

Here's what I'm thinking...

1.) Having 4.10's will give me good, fun running from lights, corners, and around my house (country area)

2.) Having 4.10's will pretty much prevent me from driving too fast on the highway, because I can't stand constant droning engine noise. (Go figure) (And I can't afford the tickets)

3.) The car will never have a blower.

4.) If I get the 3.73's, I'll always wish I'd gotten the 4.10's.

Help!

Go with 3.73's.. with the 4.10's 1st gear is useless and traction is limited whe you stomp on the gas. I ahd 73's in my 88GT and loved them. Have a buddy with 4.10's in his now and it pulls when it hooks but the rev limiter comes might quick..

i agree about the 4.10's i had them in my 89 first gear was horrible, then i went to a tremec 3550 and they have a bigger first gear, needless to say that i raced starting off in second gear cause first was totally pointless.

I just had 3.73's installed in my car the other day and I love them. People did recommend 4.10's, considering my car is an AOD convertible, but the 373's are more than enough for a daily driver. If your car is a stick, then the most I would go is 3:73, might want to even consider the 3.55's. If your not running at the track, don't get 4:10's, because I think that 1st gear will be a nothing and you will have trouble driving on the street and highway.

Speaking from experience (see sig. 4.10's baby!), I can support the claim that first gear is very short. The first time I got on it after the gears were in, I swear the thing revved to redline before I knew what happened. I already had the drag radials on so I don't know what traction would be like with regular street tires but I'd imagine it's a challenge. As far as highway driving, my rpm's are at 2500 going 70mph.

If you get 4.10's, be prepared to shift alot!! I hardly even use first gear on the street. If I had to do it over...I would have done the same thing 4.10's are a blast once you get used to all the shifting.

Thumbs up What tranny you have?

If you have a 3.35 1st gear T5 stock 85-95 V8 Mustang tranny, then 3.73 is all you will ever need.

3.73 is a great gear,I have had mine for 9 years.

No complaints, had R&E Racing install them for me.

get 3:73's fot it 4:10's are over kill unless u have an aod, also when i step on with my 3:73's it tears the tires loose right away, w/ 4:10's and a t-5 u will almost have to start off in second gear because of how short the gear is and how fast the rpms will shoot up. just go with the 3:73's i didnt even notice a change in gas mileage but that is just my 2 cents

later
