Gears Gears Gears

Well I used the calculator on here to discover that I have 4.10 gears! The guy that sold it to me said I had 3.73. But at 70mph I tacked 2850rpm with a 23.5" tire so that comes out to 4.10's.

All this time I thought I had 3.73's.. Wow I'm never going to recommend to anyone anything less than 3.73 now. My 4.10's aren't that bad at all. If I was to do it myself I think I'd go with 4.30's.

Hey Sky, the best way to tell what gears you have is to jack the rear of the car up, put a mark on the drive shaft and a mark on the tire, turn the tire 1 revolution and count how many times the drive shaft goes around. That is more accurate then the calculators. The smaller diameter tire will make the 3:73's act like a 4:10 gear, hate to burst your bubble. The gear ratio is based on a 26" tall tire I beleive.

Yeah, I know I figure I'm going to do that just to make sure, but I figured in a 23.5" tire when I calculated it.

If they're FMS gears the ratio is marked on the head of the pinion. Of course this would involve taking the cover off the diff and draining and re-filling, but its worth a try!

BTW: Another method is to count the ring gear teeth and divide this number by the number of pinion gear teeth. This is the most cut-and-dry foolproof method I can think of.

Hey Sky, if you're going off the factory tach, I believe they usually read a little high.

See you on the 24th???
