Which gears, guys? (Poll!)

Hey the next mod I'm gonna get are gears. Currently I'm with the high ratio stock 2.89's. Any suggestions for the next set? I'm thinking either 3.73, 4.10, or 4.30 or lower. I want good milage and I dont care about top end crap. If I get +14 mpg I'll be happy. Leme know what you guys think :D

3.90s?

I thought I heard a few months back that Ford came out with 3.90 gears for the 8.8s. I've had 3.55s & 3.73s and loved them both. But I'd love to experience what the 3.90s would feel like being that they are right inbetween the 2 most popular gearing sizes for our 5.0s...3.73s & 4.10s. :)

if your looking for gas mileage i would go 3.55 or 3.73, but if you are going to run at the strip remember the taller the tire you run, the more its going to kill your gear ratio.

LayanRubr 01-10-2003 07:49 PM

Hey thanks for the advice guys. Id like to see into those 3.90's.

LayanRubr 01-10-2003 07:52 PM

And considering me, my car would be going REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE SCREECH :D

Ive been planning on using 4.30s, just because I dont make any power out of the hole and a 26x10 slick kills me! Plus Im just hitting 4th gear as I cross the traps with my 3.73s, baddddd mojo!

Stang_Crazy 01-10-2003 11:03 PM

4.10's get my vote. Before the supercharger, I'd cross the 1/4 line at 5300 in 4th gear. Perrrrrfect.

4.10's

Chris_H 01-11-2003 03:17 PM

I put 3.55's in 3 years ago and loved them. I just put some 4.10's in a week ago and keep askign myself why I never did that to begin with. I absolutely love these gears. And who really cares about gas mileage anyway once you get rid of the 2.73??

I believe the 3:90's are for the Ford 9"

Im gonna go 3:73's because i do go on the freeway every now and then but not enough to need 3:55's. I want to get semi decent gas mileage since this is my only car :)

89LXRagtop 01-12-2003 03:29 AM

Definately 4:10's
Love 'em :D

Dave_mustang_50 01-12-2003 07:12 AM

I would go for the 373 gear. I had a 410 in my car and would have to shift as soon as I started. The extra torque I gained was wasted because id just spin the tires. Most times i would start out in 2nd. After that I went with 373 and love them. Oh yeah I would cruise 70 mph at like 2700 from what I can remember.
Hope this helps

Im pretty sure fms sells 3.90s for a 8.8

90lxracer 01-13-2003 10:03 PM

I looked into the 3.90's. I even talked to tommy vaughn ford about them come to find out they do not make them for 8.8'', or so the guy tells me.

Mustang_289 01-14-2003 05:26 PM

3.90 gears are new and are available from Pro-5.0 for 8.8 rears, see the url below:

theres a couple other questions you need to answer before we can help you decide. Namely, will you be drag racing primarily or is it just for fun on the street?
Will you be using street tires, or slicks?

street tires- 3.73's
dr's - 4.10's
slicks -4.30's

Has anybody ever had Pro 5.0 gears? Are they reliable?

i don't think FMS does, but I know richmond and motive does.

4:10's auto
3.55 or 3.73's for 5-speed.

when it comes to gears, spend the extra coin and stick to FMS.

Hey guys i just got a new t5 about 6 months ago and i had the 3.73 gear in it and i switch to the 4.10 and i just put the 3.90 in last week and they are the best gears you can buy Its like having the take off of the 4.10 but with no spinning at all. I would say go with the 3.90 they are great.
Ernie

Stang_Crazy 04-20-2003 12:33 PM

So you had 3.73's, then 4.10's, then 3.90's? Doesn't that get expensive?

eeh1025 04-20-2003 08:29 PM

well the 3.73 and the 4.10 i got brad new ford racing brand on ebay for 75 dollors and the new 3.90s i got from normal price at 180 and besides me dads famley owns Dietz & watson so i can buy just about anything.
but to the point those gears were great
